Re: [video] Funny 911 Tape

This gives us some source of entertainment.

Tying up a 911 line for 2.5 minutes isn't that bad, I would say...75% of the calls we receive on 911 could be reported on the non-emergency lines. Most people are simply too lazy to lookup the number. I don't blame them personally, the 911's and non-emergencies come to the same place, same people. They pay their taxes and have a right to use it when they see the need.

One person on a 2.5 minute call isn't that bad. An average accident on the freeway probably produces 20+ calls? A roll over or worse on the freeway can produce upwards of 50+ calls.

We get calls much worse than this, they just usually aren't as funny.

Perhaps that's true where you are, and is generally true in areas serviced by Sheriff's departments that cover an entire county or metro area.

However, in areas like major cities or compact suburbs, 911 usually goes to a central dispatch area that works with multiple police and fire agencies. That's why it pisses me off when people call 911 for stupid shit.

Perhaps they should institute a secondary number like 912 for non-emergency calls so that it will be directed to their local police department without the fuss of having to look it up. It would be very easy to implement with current equipment.

I actually work in a PSAP answering 911. We service 9 police jurisdictions, 11 fire & medical jurisdictions and 9 city service jurisdictions. Each of the jurisdictions ranges in size and population but all are dense urban areas. Regardless of where you live, it's still the same, they are there to service you.

So they are, in fact, not speaking to the same people they would if they were to call their local PD station (where you are)?

If so, you have a right to be upset with stupid shit like this. Of course it's comedy relief, but it's still sad that people are so lame.

311 down here is just city services, whereas it's a dedicated non-emergency police number up there.

I know in Miami, FL they get routed to the same place, we have a 305-4-POLICE number which is non emergerncy, I have called it and been greeted with "911, What's your emergency" (to which I responded that I had called the non-emergency number and that I did not have an emergency.
