Zone Alarm causing DNS Connection problems

hi all,

Just thought I would share something that I found out after a lot of frustration. Had problems connecting to the Internet (running a dual boot win2k/Win 98, with ZoneAlarm, Netgear router RT 314, Westtell Wirespeed external DSL modem) only on win2k and not on win 98. Found out that Zone Alarm was the culprit.

The only difference between the two operating systems was that I had updated the Win2k OS with the service packs and the Internet Explorer on Win 2k with security patch updates. After this, I could not connect to the Internet. After 3 frustrating weeks of trying different approaches with the help of all at DSL Reports, I uninstalled Zone Alarm, and presto was able to connect to the Internet fine. I then downloaded the latest version of ZA (ver 2.6.0.88), and guess what, could not connect to the Internet again. I uninstalled it again, and now I am back on the Internet.

Hope this helps anyone with similar problems. Am gonna let ZoneLabs know about this problem. Sure wish they would make it work again. Really like their product.

Question? Why are you running Zone Alarm when you have a router/firewall? If I were you I'd forget about Zone Alarm and just go with the router w/NAT turned on.

You would be best advised to nose around in the security forum before jumping on the advice above.

No offense ADSL Guy.

No offense taken, and I agree with you on asking around in the Security forum. It's just been my experience that the above two won't work together without a lot of configuring, and usually with little or no increase in security. I don't propose to be a security expert, I was just relying on my experience on past "no-surf" issues that I've had to troubleshoot.

I'm running zonealarm and win2k and haven't had a problem since I allowed "Internet Information Services" and "services and controller app" (both windows services) to access the internet. I found that if I block their access to the internet, I couldn't surf.

I will never uninstall zonealarm, the chance of getting a worm is too great. Zonealarm blocks programs on your computer from accessing the internet unless you give them permission.

I'm running 2 machines with Win 98 SE, 1 Win 95 machine and 1 Linux mandrake. All go through a linksys router. All the machines have static addresses on the local side (as does the router). I leave one on and connected all the time (98se) as I am DHCP with no PPPxx, so it has ZA 2.6.231 too.

I found that I can't play bridge on Pogo.com with Zone Alarm running, but that is the only problem I've had.

Where do you allow "internet information services" and "services and controller app" in zonealarm? Any help would be great. Thanks

Ryan, unless you have Win2000 you won't see it. If you do then go to ZoneAlarm -> Programs and scroll down the list looking for "Services and Controller App". I initially gave it connection privileges, but I rarely give things Server privileges. However after two weeks of it asking and finding out the same thing junky did, I finally relented and gave it full access. I think, at least it seems to act, like a DNS cache, which would be a handy thing to have. Hmmm, might be a good idea for a program.

I also have to give a thumbs up to Zone Alarm behind my
Linksys. If you have any programs in the background that
can share files or a trojan on your computer, Zone Alarms
does a great job when you have ports forwarded, but are
not in the forwarding mood.

I didn't give those apps server permission, as a matter of fact, I got a red X on server for internet, but I do have the 2 green checkmarks on the left side for connecting to internet and local network

just fyi
