Re: Toshiba PCX1100 is not completely compatible..

IMHO you're better off getting the SB5100 and a cheap (usually close to free after rebate) router from a weekly deal, simply because more people go that route and you might have better luck getting help with problems. Lots of people like the Linksys WRT54G if you want a wireless router, but it's not one of the cheaper ones.

I've been having problems with Comcast in the Columbia, SC area since the upgrade. I have a Toshiba PCX5000 (Modem/Router/Wireless combo) that I purchased about 3 years ago.

Modem doesn't drop (still have the signal lock light) but all send/recieve activity stops until I reboot the modem.

Power levels seem OK:

Power Level:
Received: 0.8 dBmV Transmitted: 47.7 dBmV

Received SNR: 34.1 dB

I had really horrible speeds (rarely broke 500kpbs) before the upgrade, now I'm about 3Mbps (when it works...) I've had Comcast techs out here at least 20 times over the last year and they always say the same thing - "Your signal levels look fine, we don't know why you're so slow".

Was looking on Toshiba's web site this morning looking to see if there was some sort of firmware update - it looks like they may have gotten out of the cable modem business because there were no cable modem products in thier online store.

I'm looking at the Motorola SBG900 to replace it.

Re: Toshiba PCX1100 is not completely compatible...

Ive had the Toshiba for a while... back when it was Comcast @Home... No problems.. since the upgrade to 4Mb/384kb i've still not experienced anything like what some of you seem to be having, packet loss, slow speeds.

still strong and I"m happy cuz i did pay like 300 bucks for this back in the day.

Soooo, If I have the PCX1100, what symptoms/problems should I be looking for.
I would doubt that Comcast would just arbitrarily replace my modem, would they?
Since there are no internal diagnostics, do I just watch for slow response and so forth?
BTW, I am renting now.

Same here, my 5-yr old rock-solid PCX1000 suddenly developed packet loss and block sync issues after the recent upgrade. Comcast shrugged so I got an SB5100 from fleabay and immediately requested a month's service credit from Comcast for the purchase. Even though I don't rent they essentially paid for me to get a new modem, but there was a couple of weeks of service calls and general aggravation. The second tech admitted that he'd already changed out over 100 of them here in the ATL and that the Motorola always fixes their problems.

I ran the pcx1100 for years without a problem until the Comcast speed upgrade. Then, after 3 service calls I bought a sb5100 and the packet loss problem went away.

Re: Toshiba PCX1100 is not completely compatible..

I've have been using the PCX1100 without any issues whatsoever since 2001. Its a great modem and IS compatible with Comcast's network. The only thing it lacks that sucks is an internal status/log page. Used be to able to use Docsdiag but Comcast shut SNMP off so this no longer works.

The PCX1100 is listed on this page from Comcast »www.comcast.com/Support/Corp1/FA···427.html

I am sure Best Buy probably has these in stock.

TD, I bought the Toshi about 4 years ago.
Been a pretty good modem, but it does not have the "off" button like the old rental RCA did.

Looks like that one you pictured here does.
Nice feature if you only want to disconnect from being online when you leave your PC on all day, but are not sitting at it.

I run a router too for security, but it would be nice to have the off button again.

Is that their latest model?
If I am going to fork out $$$ for a new Surfboard, I would probably want to get the latest one.

I think our upgrade for NW WA. is going to happen in April from what I have heard from a super at Comcast.

Thanks, Corey
Yes this is the latested modem from Moto. The button you see on the top is called a standby button or mode.Like you say it comes in handy from time to time.

Re: Toshiba PCX1100 is not completely compatible..

FWIW, when I moved from Cablevision to Comcast last summer, I brought my Terayon Terajet ECM-110 with me as it was on Comcast's list of "approved" modems. My recollection is that internally it's VERY similar if not identical to the Toshiba PCX1100 (without the USB port). So far, I haven't noticed any problems. I don't know if the problems you're experiencing are related to a firmware issue or what, but it's interesting that the TJ seems to be more compatible when it's, in fact, a near clone.

I am thinking about getting the latest Surfboard down the road.

Thanks for the info.

Are you still using the Comcast rental RCA modem Corey?

If your waiting for the plant noise to get better so you can use the PCX 1100 you better think again.Your better off buying the Moto SB5100 like i did.Good luck.:)

with the new speed upgrade at COMCAST.

I was experience random upstream and downstream latency. Upstream was particularly noticeable. Online games would continue to see downstream actions updating while any upstream actions would not transmit.

On web browsing same thing... you would click for an action and it would not take for 10 to 40 seconds.

I conducted all the trouble shooting, cookie removal, scan disk etc. I eliminated my router and direct connected with four different PCs with different network cards. Three are Win XP, Two on SP 2. One is Win 98 all had the same signs. I swapped NIC cards and added memory from other machines.

Signals up and downstream were very good. Pingplotter showed random latency. Same as my observations via online interactive gaming and the web.

After my 5th or 6th call to Comcast who still said it was compatible, I decided the only component it could be was the Toshiba PCX 1100.

I replaced it yesterday and all of the signs are gone. Regardless of what Comcast is saying the PCX1100 is not completely compatible with their new upgrade.
