| Insight and bittorrent? Hey guys, This is not a warez post or anything like that. I legally use bittorrent to share my online game videos that are made by myself. Up until recently, my bittorrent worked (both u/l and d/l). Now, nothing works. i cannot download anything or upload anything. I have done nothing to my connection and even turned off windows firewall and routed my ethernet cable straight into my computer (bypassing network) and no luck. I was reading about Insight installing a P2P proxy or something like that. can anyone elaborate or is anyone else having this same problem???
thanks, jared | |

| Re: Insight and bittorrent? yeah I went on vacation and come back and there was only two things I used bittorrent for. They were both legal. Well my speeds went downhill or i get no speed at all. Before I left i could get 422kB/s now I'm getting, when i get connected, 13kB/s at most. Something's different now. | |

| I am also having a problem, but not sure if it is insight related or just something with my network. However, if I run bittorrent, I can download fine for the most part. But sometime later, my internet cuts out. When this happens I pause a torrent and my internet magically comes back. Not sure if this affects only my computer or other computers on my network... | |

| Re: Insight and bittorrent? same thing here! I reset my router thinking maybee ports weren't forwarding or something. upon reseting i could no longer access internet(mac address was no registered with isp) yet my bt transfers continued and speeds returned to normal >50kbps. After registering new mac address with isp so i could surf the web, speed dropped back to single digit and rarely climb over 5kbps. It seems to me that there has been some kind of traffic shaping implemented in the past week. Network hardware vendors such as sandvine have hardware which can now throttle specific traffic(i.e messaging, gaming, bittorrent) without completly blocking the port. | |

Here's a nice scenerio:
Person(0), an InsightBB user, goes to a store to purchase WoW, that person has to get a huge content patch to play. So first they try using the Blizzard Downloader to find out that the speeds suck.
Then they try to find a patch and find that the places that have the patch available either charge money or they have to sit behind a long queue.
Then days later they find a working link for the patch from a friend.
Would this person be mad at Blizzard? Would they be mad at Insight?
I mean, all the person was trying to do was get a working patch for a game they downloaded. A huge patch that they could have got really fast if Insight wasn't throttling Bit Torrent. They had to go through the run-around to eventually find it.
Out there, I see 1 public link for that patch that doesn't require a subscription or a really long queue. The rest are private links.
I see this as a potential problem for Insight if the gaming industry begins adopting Bit Torrent as a way to distribute large patches. The user would probably get mad at their ISP first.

Well I wouldn't say really fast seeing as even when the wow BT client works it does not work well.
Also if the person can't find a mirror with the patch they obviously aren't trying. There are TONS of free mirrors for each WoW patch (Hell DSLreports has a mirror available in the WoW forum) =P
Guaranteed it's still an issue, but I just had to point out if you can't find a free site for the patch you need to brush up on your google.com skills -- Forum Posts:6500

I'm going to have disagree with that statement. Before Insight started goofing with things. I could get extremely awesome speeds using BitTorrent. As long as those that were sharing had decent speeds as well. I think I've posted captures of my speeds in previous threads ( in relation to BitTorrent ). -- Test Your Security Cable DiagnosticsIggyz Blog ZoneAlarm Help

| Re: Insight and bittorrent? Oops forgot and can't edit.
My IP lease is now a 4 hour one like it was back when I was having issues before. Then it was because they were doing a node move. Usually it is a 7 day lease. Hopefully they are just doing some maintenance/repair but my symptoms are exactly the same as they were back in September when Insight first started using Sandvine.

| I don't know about bittorrent, but my downloads from newsgroups have dropped to horrible speeds. In the past, I've pulled down files at a consistent 425-475 kB/s, but now my downloads seem to be hovering at around 200 kB/s. This is total crap. | |

| I think that Insight has done some tricky filtering when it comes to BT. I appears they are filtering some stuff based upon the HTTP GET Variables. BitTorrent uses these GET variables to send information to a tracker. It also looks like it is filtering the peer connections. I think it's dropping peer connection attempts, but I can't quite understand the logic behind it.
Anyone else noticing things like this?

| I am noticing the peer incoming connection dropping like flies. Didn't start happening until the 23rd. Sure there were issues for months before ( sept - Dec) But things were smooth until recently.
I have been on chat with a few techs over the past couple of days. They noticed that I had a lot of traffic coming from my end, both up and down. At the time I wasn't running anything g and only had one PC directly connected to the modem. The tech told me I may have had spyware, SO I did a couple of scans and found nothing. I also ran net limiter and found 0 traffic coming from my PC. I don't know if this sandvine crap is messing with my modem by some kind of DOS-like attack or if something else is going on. As I stated before I have a 2 hour IP lease which signals an upcoming node move, however the techs say they know of no move coming up.
My issues right now are as follows: Client Azureus
Regular BT transfer seems OK, but not really fast. I get some HTTP errors but can't tell if it is on my end or not.
Seeding doesn't work well. Incoming and outgoing connections drop as soon as they are made. I am only able to get 1 or two connections total! I get more HTTP errors here stuff like input string = f[][][]gh where []= square. So they are screwing up the headers or something.
I tried 2 PCs, router/ no router, ports forwarded, upnp etc and nothing has fixed this so I am pretty sure this is on their end or my modem.
As far as the modem goes 1 tech told me it needed to have it's counter reset so he did that. I have this error though: 2005-03-26 03:24:28 3-Critical 0x04E33A74 Started Unicast Maintenance Ranging - No Response received - T3 time-out
Got it twice and this one has the wrong? date (maybe its GMT)
Any ideas? | |

| I just found out they did do some work in Urbana-Champaign. Last night there was a kernel upgrade between 12-7AM. I was advised to reset my modem and I just did. Hopefully things will right themselves now. Unless the kernel upgrade means some hardcore sandvine implementation | |

| Wow, it appears I'm not alone. Also in Urbana-Champaign and also just started having problem on the 23rd I believe. I have been able to download but can no longer seed torrents once they've completed.
Can't stay connected to peers, and looking at Azureus logs I see: PESharedPortSelector: error occurred during socket read: java.io.IOException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host
I just signed up with the $30/month thing and was pretty happy with it but will probably cancel if this doesn't get resolved.

| Well Insight was blocking p2p pretty hard from Sept thru to Dec or Nov. Back then it was worse than it is now but similar. I don't really know why they fixed it but they did and everything was great until the 23rd.
Can you do me a favor and check your IP lease length. Perhaps we are both on a node(s) that are being worked on or have some issue that Insight will try to fix. I am being optimistic here but maybe things will go back to normal once the lease reverts to 4 days signalling the end of whatever it is they are doing/ plan to do.

| Re: Insight and bittorrent? I can't find any info on how long my IP lease is for.. I've got a Belkin router and it looks like the router's web setup page doesn't show that info.
There's an entry in the router's log which indicates I had the same IP address on March 17th as I have now, and it looks like my IP address hasn't changed at all, but that may or may not actually mean anything.

| MY IP has been the same for weeks as well, until I recently changed it by swapping registered PCs. I have a netgear router and it shows the lease when I click the connection status button on the router status page. If you hooked up just a PC you could see it with ipconfig.
ANyway I expect that once people get settled in again there will be more active discussions on this issue in these forums. Hopefully we can all bitch loudly enough until they fix it, or like I said before it may just fix itself.

1 edit | I can say from my point of view. Either a certain sites torrents are messed up ( wouldn't be the first time ). Or Insight is definitely blocking torrent traffic from that site. With one users comments in this forum in a previous thread. It wouldn't surprise me if the site I'm not naming is being targeted. I did have good luck downloading and upload using this torrent. »Now is a good time to test your BT Speeds
So for me it only seems that this is site specific. This may only be do to that site having issues of their own. Or do to something Insight has done on their end. -- Test Your Security

| Are you on a 2 hour lease? To me this signals something temporary. Now whether the temporary issue becomes permanent remains to be seen.
I have noticed that it is easier to get some speed, even up, on very active torrents so I don't know if it can be determined if they are blocking particular sites or just severing connections after downloading is done. Maybe this recent "kernel upgrade" is just a parameter tweak for Sandvine.
I really don't mind if they shape traffic and cause somewhat reduced speeds, but if they cripple it again I will be pissed because it feels like a downgrade.
