Re: Insight and bittorrent?

I just found out they did do some work in Urbana-Champaign. Last night there was a kernel upgrade between 12-7AM. I was advised to reset my modem and I just did. Hopefully things will right themselves now. Unless the kernel upgrade means some hardcore sandvine implementation

Rebooted everything and waited a bit. Whatever. Still having same problems and I still have a 2 hour IP lease ( as opposed to the usual 4) so whatever is going on here has not been fully completed.

I meant 4 days is the usual IP lease above

Wow, it appears I'm not alone. Also in Urbana-Champaign and also just started having problem on the 23rd I believe. I have been able to download but can no longer seed torrents once they've completed.

Can't stay connected to peers, and looking at Azureus logs I see:
PESharedPortSelector: error occurred during socket read: java.io.IOException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

I just signed up with the $30/month thing and was pretty happy with it but will probably cancel if this doesn't get resolved.

Well Insight was blocking p2p pretty hard from Sept thru to Dec or Nov. Back then it was worse than it is now but similar. I don't really know why they fixed it but they did and everything was great until the 23rd.

Can you do me a favor and check your IP lease length. Perhaps we are both on a node(s) that are being worked on or have some issue that Insight will try to fix. I am being optimistic here but maybe things will go back to normal once the lease reverts to 4 days signalling the end of whatever it is they are doing/ plan to do.

I can't find any info on how long my IP lease is for.. I've got a Belkin router and it looks like the router's web setup page doesn't show that info.

There's an entry in the router's log which indicates I had the same IP address on March 17th as I have now, and it looks like my IP address hasn't changed at all, but that may or may not actually mean anything.

MY IP has been the same for weeks as well, until I recently changed it by swapping registered PCs. I have a netgear router and it shows the lease when I click the connection status button on the router status page. If you hooked up just a PC you could see it with ipconfig.

ANyway I expect that once people get settled in again there will be more active discussions on this issue in these forums. Hopefully we can all bitch loudly enough until they fix it, or like I said before it may just fix itself.

I can say from my point of view. Either a certain sites torrents are messed up ( wouldn't be the first time ). Or Insight is definitely blocking torrent traffic from that site. With one users comments in this forum in a previous thread. It wouldn't surprise me if the site I'm not naming is being targeted. I did have good luck downloading and upload using this torrent. »Now is a good time to test your BT Speeds

So for me it only seems that this is site specific. This may only be do to that site having issues of their own. Or do to something Insight has done on their end.

Are you on a 2 hour lease? To me this signals something temporary. Now whether the temporary issue becomes permanent remains to be seen.

I have noticed that it is easier to get some speed, even up, on very active torrents so I don't know if it can be determined if they are blocking particular sites or just severing connections after downloading is done. Maybe this recent "kernel upgrade" is just a parameter tweak for Sandvine.

I really don't mind if they shape traffic and cause somewhat reduced speeds, but if they cripple it again I will be pissed because it feels like a downgrade.

As for the IP lease here is info from my Cisco router:

Temp IP addr: 12.203.114.xxx for peer on Interface: Ethernet0
Temp sub net mask: 255.255.252.0
DHCP Lease server: 12.223.2.34, state: 3 Bound
DHCP transaction id: 84E2601
Lease: 345600 secs, Renewal: 172800 secs, Rebind: 302400 secs

Looks like my lease is 4 days right now. I'm not sure what it was before.

Insight says they have Dynamic IPs but they really are more like static ones. When you "register" your computer on their network it writes your MAC address into a database with an associated IP. In this way you will always get the same IP address everytime your computer asks to renew it. Even if your computer was offline for a day or two.

I wonder if they are possibly doing some sort of "flow" based filtering. I've noticed the same thing with my BT client getting a whole bunch of peers from a BT tracker and then every single one gets closed out right away as non-connectable.

It actually seems a little better now because I am having some success in seeding a file. I think they are doing some serious application level filtering. I don't think this is any weak IP or port filtering, but looking inside the packets. They could be limiting the number of in/out peer connections for everyone on Insight.

Oh well so much for that theory, yet I am still on a 2 hour lease. I am aware of how their IP assigning works and I have recently switched by swapping MACs hoping it may reset things.

Have you power cycled recently? I want to know why I am on a 2 hour lease and no tech sees any work being done. Maybe I am just a subject in their latest traffic shaping experiment

Me and a number of people from my site are having problems seeding anything on Insight's network. Anyone else still experiencing the same problems?

Also I have users on Insight's network (including myself) who get errors in our BitTorrent clients that people with anyone else as an ISP don't get.

I'm getting ready to ditch Insight for SBC DSL if this doesn't clear up soon. Probably will send a nasty e-mail to them first.

Same as you IT.... im "illini25" over on your site as well. I can seed, but it's pretty damn slow. My speed just hoovers around 10 kb/sec

But im hoping down the road things will improve.....knock on wood of course.

its always nice to know you aren't alone. The problem started 3/23 and has not improved at all since then

I have't had any problems lately with BT. I was downloading linspire 5.0 and had no problems with speed as I was getting 300-400k down and after I was done it seeded well and used all my upload.

usually it seeds fine on popular torrents but if the SLR is higher than 1:10 it won't seed at all. Also I think it is localized to U-C. They figured they'd slip it in during break. Perhaps they are waiting to see what the response is from angry customers.

"Well I wouldn't say really fast seeing as even when the wow BT client works it does not work well."

I'm going to have disagree with that statement. Before Insight started goofing with things. I could get extremely awesome speeds using BitTorrent. As long as those that were sharing had decent speeds as well. I think I've posted captures of my speeds in previous threads ( in relation to BitTorrent ).
Just wanted to clarify I wasn't referring to BT I was referring to WoW's crippled BT client which sucks for the most part unless you download the "hacked" client which enables alot more features and brings speeds up to par with normal BT clients

I have also been having problems with BT in the last couple of weeks. I can download stuff just fine, and seed while downloading. But as soon as my file is complete and those peers that I was connected too finish it won't find another peer, therefore no more seeding.

It really pisses me off that they are doing this, as it has been mentioned many times in this thread that there are many legitimate uses for bittorrent right now, and only more in the future. Hopefully if enough of us complain they will remove these silly restrictions.

I've been on a torrent for the DVD image of Star Wars: Revelations (a free, legit production according to the Sunday's Lexington Herald Leader)
»www.panicstruckpro.com/ revelations/

The fastest I have gotten on my InsightBB connection was maybe 48Kbps down. Granted I am throttling my upload at 5Kbps. Would throttling my upload limit the download speed? I have about 50% of the file after 2.5 days. Should I be downloading faster off torrents? I imagine TONS of people are downloading this on bittorrent (suppossed to be really good)

I'm still getting mixed results. So I'm not 100% willing to blame Insight for this ( at least in my area ). I did get about 80 down on one torrent this morning. I'm trying to get the Pope's funeral right now though and getting horrid speeds. At this rate it will be a few days before I get the file. If Insight would make it easy for me to retrieve stuff off of their DVR unit. I wouldn't even have to be downloading this. But it's a piece of history I wanted to archive. To bad I couldn't get the CSpan version of off the DVR easily. No laptop to hook up to the DVR to get the content off of it.

"DVD image of Star Wars: Revelations"

If that truly has been released for free. That might be worth having.
