Re: DSL in Egypt

Yeh about giving some updates, well what made me say that about tedata is the fact that they just accept bad service. After weeks of tickets and service getting worst by the day, high tier tech-support told me the same thing about tedata being the reason that we had internet up when the cut happened, and that i should just accept my 300ms pings on traceroutes. And then when i renewed my subscription a week ago, had to wait for a week until line was back up.

Still, now that its up i'm getting some really good service wich is a huge upgrade from what i was getting before (80ms on traceroutes)and i'm glad theres progress on the internet speeds in egypt alltogether. Hope it lasts this time, and to get things straight, not having a week of downtime (during the cable cut), is not worth 3 months of bad service, guess the new fair policy stuff will make tedata's network even better too

@tedata.net

Tedata new speeds up to 24mbps is a huge progress, the new FAIR USAGE of between 100-150GB is good but not great, when you download something like 1GB you dont use 1GB of bandwidth you use about 1.5GB, if you leave your router connected but not downloading anything and someone port scan you the wasted BYTES will be added to the quota..

so if you download 100GB in 30 days, your quota will show 110-120gb because of 20GB wasted on TCP retried, retransmissions, port scans, junk data.

play online all day and you will add at least 1 or 2GB a day already.

the question is......do we really have 100-150gb? can we trust TEDATA or ISPs?

they need to create a page where you can log with your username and pass and see your total usage just like the ISP sees it.

but in general FAIR USAGE will improve things, i just hope they dont go and lower the 100gb to 60 then 30 etc.....

i hope.

yeh tbh that account page where you can see your used banwidth would be great. That way we can at least plan the way we spend out bytes to have good speed throughout the whole month and not get throttled the last 10 days or something.

Are other ISPs like NOL following the TEDATA lead and limiting downloads?

may be you are wrong !

iv'e seen improved ping times after upgrading speed

i dunno why but may be higher speeds make the requests done faster

but im sure that the ping time on the same phone line is getting better when you go to 2 mb from 512 k for example .

another notice :

some routers can give better ping times than others

im using Dlink G664t its not designed to work in Egypt because its working as ANNEX B ... while supported ADSL in EGYPT is ANNEX A
but i've modified the router by changing firmware to DLINK G 624t and the router worked great on ANNEX A in EGYPT .... the when changing some settings in the router page i've seen improved ping times most of the day .

TeNOL

@tedata.net

to "Rangera33" and everyone....

i think everyone do, the only difference is that TEDATA made it clear that you dont need to go over 150GB a month (that's a very big quota btw so don't complain!).

check out this PDF file for more info

»www.tedata.net/new/MultiMedia/PD···licy.pdf

anyway, this quota 100-150GB is great and bad, great because this way people wont abuse the bandwidth and so most people after finishing what they were doing will DISCONNECT from the net and free bandwidth and make pings better...

the BAD thing, is that even with monitoring programs what you see on your PC is not what you really used...

if your monitoring program such as DUMETER say you downloaded and uploaded a total of 50GB in reality you downloaded 60GB, this is because any wasted byte is counted, if someone is Port-Scanning you he is wasting some kilobytes and it will add on your Quota, if you try to BROWSE a website and the site don't open you will retry, this RETRY will add to your quota because you are RESENDING data..may be 1KB maybe 1MB....

the best thing to do to really manage your quota is that once you are done with the Internet go into the router and Disconnect manually or even better turn off the router, that way nothing additional will be added to the quota.

i did a TEST.... i have been web browsing, downloading and uploading movies from 700mb to 1.4GB, watching videos on youtube, and many things and in 1 month i barely reached 50GB so don't worry.

think about it...

you got 150GB quota.......if you download a movie of 1.4GB per day, in 30 days you only used 42GB!...this means you still got more than 100GB left to download more things or play or whatever.

so RELAX and don't worry.

if any ISP would give you 20GB per month i would've cancelled immediatly my subscription and gone 56k Dialup, but since they give you a generous 150GB, i can't complain that's MORE THAN ENOUGH. it's perfect and better, service truly will improve i guarantee it.

if they make a page you can check your realtime quota would be even better but it's ok. all is fine.

I am using LINKDSL, my subscription is supposed to be at the speed of 512/128 kb/s, but I am suffering with these people.
Download speed is for a few minutes more than 40 then gets down to 20 then 16 then 10 then 5 and less for the rest of the day. For more than 2 months I have been contacting with their technical support team ( they know nothing).
Till now no luck, all they say is in a week the service will improve, this has been going for more than 3 months now, but nothing changes.

TENOL

@tedata.net

why did you join LINKDSL i don't know......it's the worst ISP in egypt, from 3:00 in the morning till around 8 you will get 53kb/s but from 8 AM to 2:00 AM you'll get crappy speed from 50 to 0kb/s.

they wont fix anything, 5 years ago i subscribed for 1 month and cancelled, this has been going on since ever.

join NILE ONLINE, EGYNET, TEDATA, RAYA all good isps now (NOL and TEDATA are the best though), they will give you your speed and good pings. ANY OF THEM.

LINK will just steal your money and not give any speed, they are liars.

PLEASE go cancel LINKDSL immediately do not wait.

I don't think its that fair, because in theory unlimited tedata service isn't actually that unlimited, but limited, ever since Tedata used the fair policy, its not the best but the least worst of other services and trying hard to be good ...
a 512 kb usually gets out 55 kb/per sec down rate ( because in reality its 440 kb divided by 8 ), so approximately and theoretically a 24/7/30 days constant download equals 142 gb, (55kbX60secX60min/divide by 1000 = 198 mb/per hourX24hX30d/divide by 1000 = 142 gb), so if you say i download an equivalent of 12 hours a day, thats 142/2= 71 gb a month for 512 kb.

1 mb usually gets out 120 kb/per sec ( because is reality its app. 950 kb divided by 8 ), so approximately and theoretically a 24/7/30 days constant download equals 311 gb, (120kbX60secX60min/divide by 1000 = 432 mb/per hourX24hX30d/divide by 1000= 311.04 gb ) so if you say i download an equivalent of 12 hours a day thats 311/2= 155.5 gb a month for 1 mb.

and you continue to see the throritiacal maximum limit of a 24/7/30days of the rest by simply doubling (512kb=142gb/1mb=311gb/2mb=615gb/4mb=1260gb/...etc.), and you'll see although the 256/512 kb might not be affected on a monthly period, heavy users of 1 or 2 mb or higher will get affected because they may go off their limit simply because they are super fast and eventually will use what they expensively paid for !, hence, the fair policy isn't that fair, and the unlimited isn't that unlimited, people including me end up paying for limited dsl packaged in unlimited false advertisement, hope i was helpful and not theoretically boring, an internet user

may be i am wrong as you say , but here is the truth about ping time and increased bandwidith.

with 256 2nd hop latency 50 ms
with 512 2nd hop latency 40 ms
with 1024 2nd hop latency 37 ms

i have noticed that and i know exactly that these values differ alot in some centrals from other .

may be it is the matter of dslame type :
this values tested in multi . types of routers at my central with the same result .

now te data has more stable connection than before .

although their resellers are very bad and most of them don't care about speed or performance .

even the free month they do not wont to give it to the customers .

i have discussed the matter of te data fair use policy in dvd4arab forum as i'm one of the admin at network subforum .

the only thing which makes me really angry ,that the document about fair use policy is only available at English only why ??????

TENOL

@tedata.net

@HABIB -

the pings getting lower with higher speed is true, i went from 1mb to 4mb and same happened.

about the UNLIMITED/LIMITED issue, people shouldn't ABUSE the network, when you download you are really screwing up bandwidth, immagine you and other 1000 people downloading all the time, this is why speed becomes crap.

with this 150GB Fair Use at last there is a limit and people with higher speed won't abuse as much, higher speed is not the issue, if you download a 700MB at 100kb/s or 1MB/s it is still 700MB! it's not because you got faster connection = quota used faster, a website that use 500KB will use 500KB on any connection speed, that's it.

anyway i recommend nobody complain to any ISP, if you do they might do the contrary and make it instead of 150GB to 60GB or less.

in SOUTH AFRICA adsl cost 200 times as much and give you 1mb speed with 3GB per month.

150GB while not really Unlimited, it's still very FAIR!

perhaps someday they'll do like other countries and give 50GB during the day and 200GB at night or so, that would be also good, meaning during the day people won't abuse the speed which is when everyone want to surf and watch Youtube, send emails etc...and at night people will download without bothering anyone.

bandwidth is expensive and people who download 24/7 is not right and you ruin it for everyone.

if you dont abuse your connection, you wont even know the 150GB QUOTA is there.

i agree with tenol, all in all the new fair usage policy is a step up. Also since i like to play games online a lot,and maybe there are people that like to do so aswell, the game itself wont download with more than 2-10kbs max, so when you try to calculate your every month usage, dont multiply by your download speed. Connections seem solid now all over the place, people get the speeds they pay for and ping times are great, finally some quality service for everyone

TeNOL

@tedata.net

that's exactly what i meant WOW ADDICT

for once in Egypt someone took the right choice which doesnt happend a lot.

btw.. the calculations you saw from the other user are completely wrong, people don't download 24/7 at maximum speed otherwise they can't Chat, Play, watch videos or surf, if there are really people who download 24/7 at max speed they should be shot in the face, they are the main reason why the service was terrible in egypt years ago.

so thank god for Fair Usage Policy.

WOW ADDICT, if you play games all day the 150GB is more than enough you wont use more than 30-35GB at most even if you download lots of MAPS such as in UT2004/UT2007/BF2 etc, also games use your Upload speed more than Down speed when playing to send really small packets like 10 to 50kbytes or the equivalent of a JPG image lol hardly enough to use a lot of quota.

i hope ISPS dont go and ruin things now that its getting better. you never know

but how come that i get diffrent speeds with the same quota ?
this is unfair ,what makes me pay 2250 LE for 24 Mbps while i can get 1 Mbps is at 250 LE ? and i can get more than 150 GB in the month with 1Mbps .

this is the first one ,the other problem that i have seen the official site of tedata after just introduction of adsl2+ and the fair use policy was aleadry there but only for adsl2+ speeds not adsl ,after about 5-8 days i checked the site again and it was over all adsl speeds .

link dot net is the 1st company talked about FUP but their offers are better than TeData (i am not talking about the performance but the prices and the item that if i exceeded my quoto my bandwidith will be reduced to 256Kbps not 64Kbps )

TeData FUS should undergo study again .

Regarding the fair use policy, maybe you guys at cairo don't see it that much, but here in Alex the situation is disgusting, in most areas the internet networks compete with satellite networks in a spider web kind of effect (apologies to spiders for their neat and precise work).

This fair use policy will jump in the faces of these greedy networks admins!! [network admins!].
just waiting to see what will they do, I am expecting an increase of real internet users count of at least 30% when people get cut off. (64 or even 256 is a cut for these $#%^^)
