Ok Finally got the Cable Modem upgraded with the said firmware. I've had it running for a week to see if this problem clears up.

Didn't help one bit.

Cable modem still loses connection or re-obtains like crazy.

Today Friday I got new ips at:
5:56am > 6:01am > 6:36am > 7:01am > 7:06am > 7:11am > 7:16am > 7:46am > 8:01am > 8:06am

Yesterday Thursday:
7:15am > 9:46pm

Wednesday:
834am > 836am > 239pm > 248pm > 1116pm > 1131pm > 1136pm > 1141pm

And this is just for 3 days.

I've replaced the linksys router 3 times already. So it can't be the router at this point.

Should I return the Cable modem and get a different one? or what else maybe causing this problem? Annoying as hell
Please stop referring to it as a Cable modem lol, its a DSL modem

Double check all filtering or better yet REMOVE ALL PHONES from the wall (make sure you check everywhere, sometimes family members can plug in phones in locations you dont even know a phone jack is lol), if youve got a dish or alarm system make sure their filtered or unplugged...

I'd suggest double filtering just one phone and keeping it on (just so you have communication, dont want family members getting all mad right ? )

How far is the modem from any electrical devices?
Is their a poweroutlet jack right next to your phone jack?
Witht he modem plugged in and synced, pick up that one phones receiver, tap the button once and listen carefully for any noise...

If you did all that already (sorry for reposting lol) call bell and ask them to send you a new modem.

So recommend upgrading the Speed 5200 e240 with the linked Firmware listed prior?
NO thats for the 240 version not 242.

-Make sure you have the latest firmware from linksys.
-Check the screeny for settings to try
-Double check the 242 is in bridged mode (even try it with it not in bridged mode, both should work the same .. dont know why the faq says to put into bridge mode both worked fine for me)

linksys BEFSR41, Yes I had problems with mine on Rogers when they were experimenting with Ellacoya. Locked that poor little router up on many an occasion. They gave up throttling bandwidth and introduced the cap, since that time no problems. Could this be a File sharing + Ellacoya problem?????

I have a LinkSys BEFSR41 /w software version 1.05.00. Absolutely no problems on my end. I have keepalive enabled with a max idle time of 60 seconds. Also, the MTU is set to 1492. Hope this helps.

I remember having nothing but trouble with the BEFSR41 (old model, not the cisco one), with PPPoE DSL. It would constantly lose the PPPoE session. It worked flawlessly for Rogers Cable previously for a few years, but cable is DHCP. I tried firmware updates, didn't help. I scrapped it for another router which worked fine.

Thanks Van.

I tried Keep Connection alive and dial on demand options on the linksys router. But I really can't tell if it does any good. The IP change still happens. Heck the IP changes anytime I click save on the Router for any changes. Why I had a feeling it might be the router.

I selected bridge mode so the Router would take control ofo the connection and didn't have to mess with upgrading the firm and stuff. But sounding like i don't have much of a choice.

Does that firmware work for the E240 and the E242?

Linksys is new from the store actually. Haven't used it yet..but i am quite familiar with them.

new to DSL obviously, that option to get IP automatically is for Cable like from rogers internet, sympatico is DSL and it is PPoE connection

check if you marked on the router setup page 'keep connection' or something like that is there, it might be set to disconnect automatically if it doesn't detect any action for some time (not likely though if you get disconnected downloading or in games)

second thing to do is look at top of this forum at link about updated firmware for your router - I believe it is there for people like you who suffer from disconnecting »Speedstream 5200 Updated Firmware HERE

I would look at the modem first, you have probably used the linksys before and also they usually work ok AFAIK
although you seem to have been getting on with modem in router mode... the bridge mode just passes raw WAN traffic to the linksys

Got a Speedstream 5200 E242 Cable modem in router mode.

But can't stand it. Since i couldn't do anything with port forwarding and all that fun stuff. Not Swavy enough to do all the work arounds...at least not yet.

Switched the 5200 to Bridged mode and hooked up my BFESR41 Linksys router and set up in Auto Obtain IP from ISP. No Go.

Called ISP and they had me use PPPoE with login and pass.

Added this to the Linksys Router. All was handy dandy for a bit.

Computer just gets disconnected from the internet at random times. First night it worked fine no problems. Second night lost connection (with new IP from ISP) 49 times in less then 8 hours. Sometimes i get 1 IP a min..sometimes 1 a day. Driving me insane when I'm downloading or playing online games.

Anybody have a clue as to why this is happening? Bad Linksys router? Bell Sym pathetic service?

Thanks!
