| said by justin:I didn't really register whether he was talking linux or unix. In fact the same problem afflicts solaris and probably a few other non linux unix variations. I don't think you can forkbomb a default Solaris install, but I'd wait on one of the Solaris admins for that. He clearly outlines that this is linux-specific and it did not impact any of the other open source OSes he had on hand. I'm sure some of the more crusty commercial unixes may have a similar problem, but who's running shell servers on AIX?
said by justin:It was just the article was breathless (it even mentioned windows!), and yet the issue is really only of concern to administrators who run multi-user boxes with shell access in tough environments.. and they have probably been more than aware of the various resource limits necessary to keep things running safely, for ages. I won't rehash this again, but it's like putting a trigger lock on a gun. You're safer with it on, and if you don't know how to get it off, you have no business playing with the gun. That's a bit extreme, but it is a pretty elastic analogy. -- Bush/Cheney '04! - Scared Straight "Patriotism is supporting your country all the time and your government when it deserves it." |
