| NIC caused freezes I hope this is in the right place. I'm new to DSL.
I'm new to telco dsl but have been on MSN dialup for about 5 yrs.
ordered online, $149 self install from swbell
7/27/01 got self install kit w/Kingston KNE111, SpeedStream 5260 DSL modem, filters, CD.
installed all components and software. got four greens right off but no connect with browser. Didn't know that I was missing 2nd package! Next day, called helpdesk and got the word that a 2nd part was required.
A week later, registration CD arrives and did install. Instructions say to run "Launch.exe" but no such program on CD. My autorun is turned off so I opened the autorun file and ran what was in there. Got registered after figuring out that the username includes the domain.
I get online but can't download anything. My browser works OK except that it often won't completely finish loading the page. I can get 70% of a status bar at the bottom of the window, then stops. If I hit the stop button, the loading completes.
Several dozen hours and reboots later and after reviewing every DSL FAQ I could find on dialup, I reformatted and reloaded Windows95. My configuration is: Win95 on a 233MHz/96MByte ACER from 1998. I only loaded Windows and a VooDoo3 display card so that the configuration would be as clean as possible.
08/15/01 Several more hours and reboots later and I figure that Windows95 just isn't up the the task and load Windows Me. No change. I tried all the tweaks, etc but no luck. I downloaded fixes from dialup and tried DRTCP setting but no luck. The times that I was able to get speed tests to work, I got 600 to 700 Kbps down and 106+Kbps up! Usually it just freezes during the test.
I can get 9Kbyte downloads from my dialup.
08/17/2001 SUCCESS!!!!!! I changed out the Kingston KNE111 for 3COM 39C905-TX and now it flies!!! ANYONE HAVING FREEZES OR NO DOWNLOAD PROBLEMS SHOULD TRY THIS FIRST.
I'm about 7000 ft from the CO.

Ranma, to the FAQ? |

| reply to see_tee Several people (myself included) had total system lockups using that NIC. Got 3Coms and problem disappeared. It was horrendous with the Kingston--the PC would lockup even if I wasn't surfing...only "solution" was a hard reboot, which all versions of Window$ just love...:) I too had reformatted and installed EVERYTHING new, but as long as that Kingston was in my machine it froze up. Everyone I know that is in the networking biz tells me the Kingston is a pretty good NIC, and I believe them, but certain PCs cough it up like a hairball. |

FlippantSo Much For SubtletyPremium,Mod join:2000-06-04 Katy, TX | reply to see_tee I have a Kingston 110. Never have had a lick of problems with it. In fact I have never seen so many reports of bad NICs ever. But I guess as they become checkout line fodder the quality is bound to get worse. |

RanmaPremium join:2001-04-28 Houston, TX | reply to Flippant Ok. Everybody take a look at the revised FAQ entry for the SBC HARDWARE/SOFTWARE FAQ. It looks much improved. We seem to be getting more download problems lately.
FAQ #1568 I can browse but I can't download. -- need a desktop support or tier 1 helpdesk tech job in a corp atmosphere in DFW, Austin, or Houston? Please let me know if you know a place hiring for people with only a year's experience. |

| reply to see_tee Oh, by the way, A HUGE THANKS TO DSLREPORTS!!! I am very sure that I would have spent hundreds of hours looking for a solution without the info that I got from this site. I found located the guy that was supposed to have written Qstart and sent him a post to find out why Qstart won't spot a bad/marginal KNE111TX. I post if I hear back from him. Thanks again. |

RanmaPremium join:2001-04-28 Houston, TX | I am not sure if it's just a defective NIC or if all the Kingstons have this problem but only with certain motherboards or systems. Does anybody think replacing a Kingston KNE111TX for another Kingston KNE111TX will solve download issues? If so I might include it in the FAQ, though it is so cheap to just buy another brand NIC and more convenient than making a trouble ticket. -- need a desktop support or tier 1 helpdesk tech job in a corp atmosphere in DFW, Austin, or Houston? | I would personally go with another brand NIC. There also seem to be issues with on board NICs like the ones Compac in particular uses. Although that is a different set of problems. Hmm, maybe a new thread with recommended hardware would be good. Get a bunch of input and then organize the results in a FAQ entry.
Things like: •NICs •modems •routers •UPS/Surge Protectors •cables •filters
It would be a nice list to have. |

| reply to see_tee I did contact the folks at ACER for info on hardware but the reply was that ACER had no experience with the Kingston. I did a search and turned up a few items on BBS where folks had KNE111TX problems. A similar search on 3COMs did NOT produce any problems. I suppose that SWBELL got a DEAL on the KNE111TXs!?
PS Why didn't someone tell me how cool it is to be listening to Panama radio live and surfing at the same time??? WOW. [text was edited by author 2001-08-18 12:12:44] |

hoovs join:2001-08-11 Rockwall, TX | reply to Ranma If you'd like a sample of one, SBC sent me a second KNE111 after that was suggested as a potential problem. My download freezes didn't clear up until I swapped it with a KNE110 [courtesy of ASI] |

| reply to see_tee I have a 3COM at the moment and I can't bear the thought of shutting down long enough to investigate the NIC. Is this the same speed rush that druggies get from dope???
I heard back from the Qstart guy: >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dear Mr. Hattersley, I there any way for Qstart to locate the problems caused by the Kingston KNE111TX NIC? Several DSL customers are receiving these with sbcglobal.net self install kits and the result is generally normal browsing but no download capability. I switched mine to a 3COM to fix the problem but many customers (as well as most tech support) don't know what's going on. I ran Qstart on mine and it came back with a clean bill of health when in fact the card won't work. Any suggestions you could provide would be appreciated.
Thanks, >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Strange problem you have encountered.
The KNE111TX NIC must be sending and receiving packets since you can browse ok. Something about how the other software is set up could be causing the problem or it could have some other cause.
Along with some other engineers at Kingston, I created both QStart and the self install utility. Unfortunately, none of those engineers nor myself are still under contract nor on the payroll at Kingston.
However, if you are interested in me helping solve the problem we could arrange a contract -- I charge $75 to $150 per hour depending on the situation.
Good luck. Dave >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I don't know about anyone else but $75 will buy all the NICs that I will need for a lifetime. For now, I'll just stay with the 3COM. |

That is really funny!
And almost typical!
Well, back to flipping hamburgers for him.
No offense to all you P.C.'ers out there. |

see_tee join:2001-08-14 Fort Worth, TX | reply to Ranma OK, I couldn't stand the suspense so I called support and got a 2nd KNE111TX. No dice. Exact same stalls and freezes. I put a $10 Netgear FA311 and raspppoe and bang! DSL as it was meant to be. Thanks for the help. |
