need to restore dell inspiron 1000, no recovery ds

I'm trying to restore a dell 1000 inspiron laptop, but I think that it has a built in partition to restore from.

I'm trying to fix it for a friend and they gave me everything that they got with it. They did not get a dell xp disk or a dell resource disk.

How am I supposed to restore this damn thing. Is there a key that I can press upon boot up that will start the recovery without any extra disk? If not I can install windows xp, but I prefer not to do that if I don't have to.

Thanks for any and all help

Interesting. Every Dell I've ever seen came with recovery CDs and not with a recovery partition.

I can't say for sure about the 1000. I got an Inspiron 600m in February and ran across the restore instructions in the user's manual. You press CTRL+F11 at boot to initiate it, and it restores from a hidden partition on the hard drive.

I went to my laptop and did a screen capture with the full instructions (attached). You might want to double check Dell's site to see if the same procedure applies to the 1000. Good luck!

It worked perfectly.

I thought that the key was f10 or f11, but I would have never guessed that you would have had to press the ctrl key also to activate it.

thanks again
