| Good Signal, but Internet Connection Drops out.
Hello,
I have a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router, with a netgear WG511 network adapter on my laptop. Now the thing that bothers me is , i can't seem to fix a problem where in one area of my house, i have a good signal of 65%, yet i can't receive an IP from the router.
I have tried setting the wireless to only 11mbps, which did fix the problem for 2 minutes, then the connection dropped out again and couldn't reconnect. I've tried moving the router around, which even made the farthest room in the house which is a washroom in the top floor (my router is in the middle(main) floor) have internet, but that same area of my house i can't get internet connection. My wireless adapter sees a signal, but cant connect.
I have most things on default, except that i don't have the SSID broadcast on, i have mac filtering on, and i have tried every possible channel to see which one is best, and 9 is good for me. More over, even tho when i do have internet connectivity, its not the smoothest. For example, it would take a while when requesting a page, also when loading a website, it would sit there for a while, then resumes loading.
So please anyone can help me? i have the most up to date firmware for both devices. I'm just running out of ideas.
Anyone here can suggest anything, it will be greatly appreciated. |

First, I'd re-enable SSID broadcast. Some wireless cards have problems when it's not being broadcasted. After it's enabled, see if you get any improvement. -- The new Secure-Wifi.net is open!

Anymore suggestions? Should i play around with the thresholds? since i really don't know what to do now. |

| reply to euroglx I just tried it again, i re enabled SSID broadcast, and surprisingly i had internet connectivity, but for only 5 minutes, its a start i guess, then it dropped out on me, and couldn't reconnect.
I also disabled mac filtering, no difference this time. |

| Have you tried your laptop on other APs (a local coffee shop, a friend)? If it doesn't work on those APs either, then it's probably a wireless card problem. -- The new Secure-Wifi.net is open!

| Yeah i have, it works flawlessly on my campus's wireless network. Even when the signal is shown as 40% i still have internet connectivity and with no major hangs when browsing the internet.
The thing is, this is my second network adapter, i replaced my old one that was prone to disconnection.
It seems that there is some sort of interference in my neighbourhood. But should i play around with the beacon intervals, and Thresholds on my router? would that increase help my laptop receive an ip from the router?
I guess i really have tried everything. |

| I don't know anything about the beacon or thresholds. I remember some people suggestion changing those for disconnect problems, but I don't remember the specifics.
Hopefully, someone that does will read this thread -- The new Secure-Wifi.net is open!

| Yup 2.4ghz phones are in the house, and a microwave. hehe. And yes, there are other wireless networks in the area, 2 to be exact.
In the area that i cant get internet connectivity, the signal to one of the wireless networks is 50%. The other is 10%. But mine is at a totally different channel.
See right now I'm in a room that is just 10 feet across from that area and my wireless is at 80% and I'm typing from my laptop right now.
Its just when i walk across to that area, it goes dead. |

Try resetting your Advanced Wireless Settings as follows:
Beacon Interval: 50 Frag Threshold: 2304 RTS Threshold: 2304
Let us know if this helps. |
