If your area encounters frequent lightning and thunderstorm then better pull out the phone line from the modem whenever it rains heavily or get a lightning surge protector specially made for ADSL lines from Cal-Lab... gives u peace of mind.. using normal lightning surge protector will usually cause the ADSL link to drop because the signal becomes weaker after going through the normal surge protector.. |

1st, find out what modem they're gonna give you. Check out chipsets in used - superduper or run of the mill? Then check out how much headaches current users are getting becos of this modem. When you 'rent' (RM11/mth), you'd want to rent a 'proper' modem. If you have a choice betw modem only and modem/router combo, choose modem only and be prepared to buy yourself an ADSL router.
2nd, check what's available in the market these days. Any with built in lightning arrestor on the input line? My mandatory criteria for ADSL modems, I wont use an FOC modem w/o this feature. Check prices, expect them to be slightly higher than 'normal' one-lightning-strike modems. Amortize across 12 monthly installment payments. Compare prices with Telekom rental plan. Make your choice.
Modem. Get one with minimal tweaking caps, with popular ATM link holding or handshaking 'protocols', good enuf. Non-USB, external power supply. Half lunch box size proper ventilation, not CD casing size - heat.
Router. Get one with maximum tweaking caps. Good default firewall features. 'Wire-speed' xfer caps per wired port. If Wi-Fi, ability to fix compatibility for individual standards (not auto), and decent WiFi security features. Again, half lunch box size with proper ventilation, never sleek CD sized designs - you're buying an important device to be on for 24/7, not a decorative household item.
Remember, these are meant to be 'work horses', designed for use for long operating periods (days and months) without need for user intervention. Nevermind if you currently want to use it for 4hrs each day - try buying a car good only for making short 10km trips to buy groceries, they dont make them these days but sadly, they still make such modem/routers today.

I would agree with Zola unless you stayed in area that frequently encounter lightning and thunderstorm.

Difference:
With modem :
1. No need to buy modem yourself, TMNut will give you one.
2. Quality good or not, depend on what modem they give.
3. You have to pay a bit extra compare to the without-modem package. You are like renting the modem from TMNut. With modem (RM99), without modem (RM88), so you'll have to pay the extra RM11 every month until you terminate your package.
4. No need to take good care of your modem, lightning strike or anything, just call them up to replace a new one. But i need to warn you, whether to replace or not it's totally up to TMNut. So, better still take good care of the modem.
Without modem :
1. You buy your own modem.
2. Pick whatever modem which suits your network configuration. Who knows you want router-modem, etc.
3. Save that RM11 every month. If you are thinking of using the modem for a long period. RM11 x 12month = RM132, as long as your own modem doesn't die in 1 year, you'll save the rest (RM11 every month) until it dies after 1 year.
4. Take good care of the modem, because once it's broken, you'll have to buy a new one yourself.
Ok, now you judge by yourself.
