Re: New Discussion Group for Radio Shack Employees

Well, It's interesting to see all this talk about RS. I worked for the company for a long time and was very proud of the customer service I provided. I managed one of the 1st larger format concept stores in the Montreal area.

I managed the following stores (In order):
5445
5414
5449
5448
5451
5429

It's going to be sad to see RadioShack Canada change names...but does anyone else look at the news on the RadioShack Corp. US website?

Once RadioShack Canada changes it's name, RadioShack USA will probably come back to Canada and open it's own stores.

That's messed up. They will just take the 30+ years of customer name recognition and walk away with the customers who have no idea what happened with all the name changes.

I tell you that the name change will kill a lot of RS stores once RS USA comes north.

Re: Radio Shack in Canada no more?

The name change will occur due to the fact that Circuit City inc. bought the Canadian company Intertan, who has been licencing the name from Radioshack Corp. since 1987.
Intertan was a spin off from Tandy corp now Radioshack corp
Intertan is now wholey own buy Circuit City. All the products will remain the same but the lables will change from radioshack to Nexxtech, Centrios, Liquid Video, Wasaki, Etc. the store will change their name but the service and products will remain the same and may expand with a new line up from Circuit City

Well that's a good laugh!

If my customers can't figure out how to use thier mp3 players/install them I do step-by-step over the phone.

Guess how much I charge? NOTHING. Radio Shack, I mean come on! That's some shitty customer service.

Re: New Discussion Group for Radio Shack Employees

Yes, please help me! My spinning lightning globe won't fry my cat!

I just can't stand Radio Shack, never could. Especially in Brantford. It seems that all they have a stupid tech toys that serve no real fucntion.

"Hey honey, instead of buying a new computer for christmas let's get an inflatable RC car!"

Most Radio Shacks I've been in are too small to hold the product they have, usually have kids playing with the toys, and often sales staff that haven't a clue about real technology.

A customer bought an mp3 player from me today, and was just at Radio Shack before coming in. She was told that "128 MB mp3 player will hold 4 hours of CD Quality music." My ass it will. When running mp3's @ 128kbps you get approx. 1 hour for every 64 MB.

I hate it when retail staff try to take advantage of a customer. It's just morally/ethically wrong, and is NOT the way to close a sale.

Re: Radio Shack in Canada no more?

Welcome to The Source By Circuit City. The official announcement is due today. The Star has a story on it in the business section. Since it is registered required, here it is:

"After 35 years as Radio Shack, one of the country's best-known consumer electronics retailers is changing its name to The Source by Circuit City.

The move, to be formally announced today, comes after the retailer lost a court battle in the U.S. last month.

RadioShack Corp., in the U.S., said the Canadian retailer, formerly owned by InterTan Inc., of Barrie, had violated its licensing agreement when InterTan agreed to be bought by rival U.S. consumer electronics retailer Circuit City Stores Inc.

InterTan was Radio Shack's parent company in Canada.

The name change is just one of several changes the Canadian unit will make this year, president and chief executive Brian Levy said yesterday.

The 840-store chain said it plans to add more digital products. It will also begin experimenting with larger stores, doubling them in size to 5,500 square feet, Levy said.

The retailer plans to spend $22 million this year, roughly double its usual advertising and marketing budget, to promote the new name, Levy added.

"By the end of this year, our media campaign is such that there will be little left to chance," Levy said. "Circuit City is a very well known name in the U.S. and though Circuit City is not as well known here as Radio Shack, the name recognition is very positive in Canada."

Circuit City said it decided to modify its name slightly for the Canadian market, adding "The Source by" to its usual "Circuit City" banner to differentiate the smaller Canadian stores from its larger U.S. format.

It also gives the company the option of moving the smaller format stores into the U.S. market in the future, Circuit City chairman and chief executive Alan McCollough said.

"You have to think beyond today," McCollough said. The company has found in InterTan a wealth of experience in operating smaller format stores, he added.

Circuit City will be to some degree copying a strategy adopted by its big U.S. rival, Best Buy Inc.

Best Buy entered the Canadian market through the purchase of the Future Shop chain, which it has maintained as a distinct brand while also opening its larger Best Buy stores. The combined chain now controls nearly 30 per cent of the Canadian marketplace.

Circuit City said its original goal in buying InterTan was to get its hands on its broad range of private-label products. So far, the company has transferred about 300 of the 3,000 Nexxtech and Centrios brands developed for InterTan to its Circuit City stores in the U.S., McCollough said."

In a way the name change is not from RadioShack to The Source, it is from The Shack to The Source. I do like the idea of larger stores.

Just went to check the RS website and it is no more. All you find is a notice stating The Source now owns them. Can't access the site to find product or store locations....does this mean the stores are closed too?

Although my store is soon to go JV as of June 1st.. i can't help wondering if the corporate payroll will change with the name... weve been taking paycuts for sometime especially in the cellular and ewp's. I hope things change, if they do and its better than my managers pay ... ill be transfering to a corpotate store before we go JV.

Bleh. I'm not gonna be able to tell people to "Buy it at Radio Shack" anymore.

The website still worked yesterday. I wonder if the local stores will remain open until they are debranded? I hope they keep my local store manager, he's worked there for 10+ years, very nice guy.

@shawcable.net

I work for RadioShack Canada in the Western Canada. from what I've heard there will be no store closures. They just had us put up a huge cardboard sign in the front the of the store detailing what's happening.
Theres going to be allot of changes I hear, one of them being that we will no longer carry CRT TV's.
RadioShack Canada was a jack of all trades when it came to electronics, a little bit of everything. but always missing stuff. Perhaps that will change.
That and they have all new uniforms, black kacky pants white dress shirt and a blue vest is what I've heard.

I've also heard the Rumor that RadioShack USA will be headed up to Canada, and they will look at anyone who was formally employed by RadioShack Canada first over most everyone else. I've also heard rumor that some non-corpratly owned stores (not owned by Intertan) my keep the name RadioShack. I've also heard they will be liquidating everything that is Branded RadioShack, so there may be some good deals to be had. but this is all rumor so far I have not heard any of this is fore certain.

As for employee discounts? its 15% as far as I know, (it goes up to 25% over Christmas)

In my experience, RadioShack was the most overpriced electronic store I knew... I can't even believe sellers could come to you with a smile in their face knowing they were gonna rip the person off big time !

Anyway, hopefully, they will review their pricing policy !

Personally, I think it's a great shame.

Sure, CC, BestBuy, and FutureShop are nice places to buy completed product, but RadioShack (or Tandy) were always "safe havens" for those of us that were looking for parts and things to actually do things ourselves with.

The other larger name stores are complete and utter crap for looking for wire, plugs, fuses, solder, etc etc.

This is a shame, and I hope that the current RS stores don't become Circuit City Clones. That's all we need - another huge chain of stores filled with the same old finished product junk, and completely uneducated school kids pretending to be sales people.

"Can I help you Sir?"
"Yes, I need to buy some wire."
"Uhhhh, yes we have Cell Phones over there."
"No. Wire, please."
"Uhhhh, does that attack to a Computer?"...........

That's a good point. Of course living in the GTA I could always hit the surplus shops (like Active on Queen Street East) to get my bits and pieces.

Ironically I was at a Radio Shack yesterday just as The Source sign was being hung. I also caught a glimpse of a memo to all stores stating that said sign MUST be up by the morning of April 27. Guess these guys were a day late.

I wonder how well they'll do with the name change AND revamping of stores and inventory. "Radio Shack" was pure name recognization, even if their prices were extremely inflated (and for sure, they were) people still went to Radio Shack for things like batteries, electronic gadgets and the like.

The name "The Source by Circuit City" is kind of bizzare sounding. Maybe they should have just gone with "Circuit City Source".

In Quebec it's really going to be strange, they're calling it "La Source par Circuit City". Previously they were an American franchise so they could keep an English name here (i.e. BurgerKing, Second Cup, Dunkin' Dounuts, Walmart). Going from "Radio Shack" to "La Source"...I don't think I'll ever get used to it.

I wonder if they won't disappear altogether in some places just because of the name change alone.

Linear thought processes at their level worst.

Here's a thought: the majority in the area speak a different language, so the signs will have different words. Three out of five, that's a whopping 60%, will remain the same (although "Source" is spelt the same but with a different pronunciation in our two official languages).

By your logic: Should Alimentation Couche Tard, who in the last year have bought 1600 Circle K stores (among other purchases) in the US, change the name to "Couche Tard" because the owner is now a Quebec company? Yeah, I can just imagine the jokes over that name change (for those who don't speak French, the convenience store's name means, when translated literally, "go to bed late" but the accepted meaning would be "open late" -- native French speakers can feel free to correct me).

Meh...why do I bother to point this out? Hope springs eternal I suppose.

Back to the topic at hand....

I'd have thought that they'd come up with something either (a) a bit more original, or at least (b) a bit less cumbersome that "The Source by Circuit City". What do they expect people to shorten that to when referring to it? Someone is getting a big cheque for some rather poor work IMHO.
