| [Outlook] Tips, Tricks & Most Valuable Add-Ons wanted
After a recent reset of my system, and now running a nicely fresh, responsive, updated and secure Windows XP Pro setup, I have decided that I will give Outlook a new try. I have failed to find a replacement for it in terms of email + PIM combos, so I see myself forced to stick to Outlook.
I was wondering if any of you Outlook users out there would be willing to share some of their favorite tips, tricks, tweaks? and add-ons for Outlook for me to explore? Outlook can't be perfect straight out of the box. That's why I'm asking

| reply to illJazz Good IMAP handling. That's the biggest one, because I use the IMAP protocol.
Intuitive and good organization of email is another thing I'm big on. Opera's M2 mail client is great at this, but it's a very, VERY simple client. I need more power. Outlook has lots of power. I'm just wondering if there's a way for me to improve upon what comes right out of the box. -- IMHO. As always »www.abisource.com/ - Free, open-source Text Editor. Great alternative to MS Word |

Two add-ons I use are:•The Personal File Folder Backup utility from Microsoft so I never have to concern myself with data loss.•An Attachment Options Add-on from Outlook MVP Ken Slovak which gives me the ability to control the types of attachments Outlook will allow without having to edit the registry manually.
As far as tips, I have found sorting my contacts by Categories make it easier to sort through the 100's of names I have stored, especially in the PDA. -- Life is like an Adventure... BUT COOL GRAPHICS |

Lookout V 1.2 is a fantastic free add-on offered by Microsoft. »www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta···yLang=en
The good: It will index all your email for near instantaneous access to any message by searching by various criteria. It will also index all your word files making it very easy to find almost anything.
The bad: It is a memory hog and can slow down Outlook and your system. There is a beta version available that they have done some tweaking of memory management on, to hopefully address these issues.
I have put it on a number of computers and the users say they could not live without it. |

Lookout V 1.2 is great. I haven't noticed it as resource hog but then i wasn't looking for it. Will keep an eye now

Thank you for pointing out the Personal File Folder Backup add-on. This will make my life much easier!
Up until now, I've been backing up the .pst files by the import/export feature in Outlook. It works, but this is just so much easier. -- You can't reason someone out of something they weren't reasoned into. -- Mark Twain |

| reply to GeekNJ Yes, Microsoft is still offering an older version.
Thanks for the link. As Kramer stated, it really is a nice add-on but the version MS had seemed memory intensive. From the release notes, it looks like the author has been providing fixes on a regular basis. -- Life is like an Adventure... BUT COOL GRAPHICS |

exactly... and this was the second deja vu i've had at BBR today. when i was searching it was like "tell me i'm not dreaming".
Fyle: apart from a couple of things that bug me Outlook is pretty cool for my needs so i don't really use many extra bells & whistles.
anyways... drake was on the right track. let's narrow down your needs:
Good IMAP handling Intuitive and good organization of email
is there anything else that falls within your Top 3 or Top 5 feature wishlist for Outlook? -- "be careful of the toes you step on today, they may be connected to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow" |

As I was checking out Lookout.. I found this page: »sandbox.msn.com/
Great stuff
As to more specific wishes.. the main thing right now is how to have my mail available LOCALLY and not just on the IMAP server. Another thing is HEADERS. WIth the out-of-the box Outlook setup, one can't tell JACK about an email because only a fraction, (the most basic view), of headers is shown. I like that option in Opera's M2 and Mozilla's Thunderbird.. to show you extensive header information to see where the email's really coming from. I have a case like this right now. I get an email from eBay telling me to change something.. obviously I know it's spam/phishing/whateveryouwannacallit, but I'd still like to be able to make sure because the FROM field reads aw-confirm@ebay.com which is a legit eBay address. Since any address can be put into the FROM: field if one knows how, that means absolutely nothing.
My biggest thing is the ability to access mail locally, really. Basically, if I were to pull my ethernet cable out right now.. I couldn't access most of my email. That's pretty bad. -- IMHO. As always »www.abisource.com/ - Free, open-source Text Editor. Great alternative to MS Word |

1 edit | reply to illJazz it looks as if these questions are answered or at least attempted by you in the other thread too Fyle. i've just had a good read of it... check it out and if not then let us know.
btw... for the second question i'm afraid there's nothing you can do about it until you use the purge files method mentioned in the other thread. -- "be careful of the toes you step on today, they may be connected to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow" |
