| [XP Home] SP2 incompatible with Avast! and Outpost Firewall
Hi!
I realize that the blue screens I got on my Thoshiba laptop are caused by incompatibility between SP2 and Avast! and Outpost I installed, because the problem disappeared when I dumped both programs.
So I wonder how to fix that, because I would like to keep those programs.
Could you give me a help?

Well, sorry since I've not been clear enough.
The problem is that I get from time to time a blue screen, with error 0xD1 and the message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
I thought it was an incompatibility between SP2 and the programs I had installed, but I think now it's more some traces of symantec in the registry which are in conflict with the new AV because I used previously Norton AV and I uninstalled it before installing Avast.
What was saying Ant718 seems to confirm that.
So tomorrow I'll try to clean the registry, and I'll keep watching events.
Now as you are much more experienced than I am, a clue from you would be very helpful.

Did you notice a driver or file named on the Blue Screen?
That driver or file would be the source of the BSOD, and may be contributing to the cause of the BSOD.
If no driver or file was named on the Blue Screen, you could consider uploading a minidump file from one of the crashes (located in the C:\Windows\Minidump folder), and someone with debugging tools could take a look at it, and try to determine the "source" of the Stop Error. |

I do'nt know if this is helpful, but the full message was:
"STOP¨:0x000000D1 (0x7199DF52,0x00000002,0x7199DF52) DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL3
I ca'nt imagine really any driver involved in the problem.
Instead, I realize that I used Norton AV and I uninstalled it before loading and installing Avast AV. So, Norton has a very bad reputation as for the traces it puts in the registry very difficult to delete.
My idea now is to clean registry of every remembrance of Norton and try once more to launch Avast.
Am I right so far? |

Actually, it is giving you direction. The error message is generated by a faulty driver or service and the article gives specific direction on how to use the diagnostic information generated to resolve the problem.

It would be helpful to know what versions of those programs you are using. I have both running with zero problems. Maybe you have old versions? |

If a file is identified in the crash, especially a third party driver, that may help pinpoint why this is occurring.
The problem may be with a driver already on your system. Or a clash between drivers.
Do you recall when the problem started? Did it coincide with any change to your system?
Did the BSOD's occur when you just had NAV? |

Well, here are all my doubts and as I'm not a fine computer detective, I'm almost drowned.
Toshiba sells its laptops (at least the one I bought) with XP Home SP2 and Norton embedded, and Winfows Firewall activated. So my daughter began to use his laptop until an error appeared, not a BSOD, with a message prompting to insert the restore disk and to reinstall. So I did.
Then, I installed Firefox and Thunderbird, uninstalled Norton AV, installed Outpost Firewall and Avast!
And the infernal blue sequence began.
I am now convinced now that SP2 is not compatible with Avast and Outpost, but Symantec creates problems.
The retailer who sold me the laptop sees noting to do. Hardware is clean.
Of course Microsoft created a minidump file but I am unable to interpret it.
I jumped into the Event viewer but that way does'nt lead anywhere.
So, what could I do? Reisntall Toshiba's Windows with SP2 and NAV and live with, forgetting Avast and Outpost? Or still looking madly for a solution?

| Your problem is most likely that your un-install of NAV
left some remmenants behind. This is very common with NAV.
Symantec does have a utility that is supposed to remove all these leftovers. Most firewalls and AV's will not work properly if a user simply uninstalls NAV in the normal way, ie windows add and remove.

You will most likely have to re-install both Avast and Outpost after you remove the rest of NAV.

Have you tried to run either Outpost Firewall or Avast alone to see if one of them may in some way be triggering this issue?
And symantec traces in the registry that I nick named Norton bread crumbs can cause issues for sure I've dealt with a few in the past.
Hope you get this figured out and resolved soon.
