| Adding a DI-624 to a Netgear DG632 ADSL Modem/Rout
via email...My problem is with the D-Link DI-624 Router, which I recently purchased to provide wireless internet access for a laptop.
I am using a Dell desktop with Windows XP, and a Netgear DG632 ADSL Modem Router via an ethernet connection to the desktop, and have no problem at all connecting to the Internet. I installed the DI-624 exactly as indicated in the documentation provided, but though the two devices appear to recognise one another, I cannot then access the internet. Are you aware of anything which might cause this to occur? I am reasonably computer literate, but have no experience whatsoever of routers, either wired or wireless. The DG632 is a router and a gateway. The DI-624 is not designed to connect to a gateway, it is designed to be a gateway.
Fortunately, you can still use it as a Wireless Access Point, if you wish.
In this configuration, your DG632 will continue to perform as it always has. The DI-624 will be both a wired and wireless extension to it.
You will not be using the WAN port on the DI-624.
Connect a computer to a LAN port on the DI-624. Change the LAN IP address to an unused IP address on your DG632's LAN. For example, if your DG632 is 192.168.1.1, then you can make the DI-624 192.168.1.201. After clicking apply, you'll have to re-connect with the DI-624 using the new address.
On the DI-624's Home / DHCP page, disable the DHCP server.
On the DI-624's Home / WAN page, set the WAN port to Static IP, set the IP address to 99.99.99.99, netmask 255.255.255.0, gateway 99.99.99.100, dns 99.99.99.100. Don't worry about these bogus values as they will not be used and are only to prevent the DI-624 from complaining about not being able to get a WAN address.
Disconnect your computer from the DI-624. Connect the DG632 and the DI-624 via a LAN port on each.
Your physical connections are now done. The DI-624 will function as a wireless access point but the DG632 will still be the gateway, firewall, DHCP server, and maybe the DNS server (if that's a DG632 feature).
You will have to access the DI-624's Home / Wireless tab to configure the wireless part. However, most of the DI-624 configuration is no longer needed -- firewall, DHCP, system log -- really anything that would rely or work with the WAN port.
Hope that helps!
