| [wireless] Linksys wireless repeater WRE54G?
Just wondering if anyone here has tried the Linksys wireless repeater model WRE54G? Looks interesting, but I am not sure if it is the solution to my ranges problems? I tried replacing my stock antenna's with the linksys hi gain models and saw no difference in range.
TIA -- Did you ever stop to think, and forget to start again? |

| Mine has been working great now that they recently released a firmware version that supports WPA encryption. It made a HUGE difference at the other end of our house. It does indeed work well, but it can be a pain to set up... the new firmware helps a lot! |

| reply to slomotion There are two downsides to the WRE54G after you set it up. First, it cuts you bandwidth in half, since it only has one radion and must recieve and retransmit the packets with its own MAC address, which leads to the second problem defeats MAC address filtering. If you enabled MAC address filtering on your router as a means of security., it will no lnger function properly. You must put the MAC address of the repeater in to the list of PC's permitted to access the router and since it re-transmits the packets with its own MAC address it masks the sources of transmission. The WRE54G is difficult to set up. You should use the auto-configuration button with no encryption on your router and with the router transmitting its's SSID. SSID transmission disabling adds little to security, since the SSID is transmitted and can be easily be determined. Once you get it set up use the WEB interface to enable encryption and change the password on the repeater, then you have to change the necryption on the router. The latest firmware supports up to WPA-PSK AES or TKIP. One you get it connected again to the router, you have to power it down for at least thirty seconds and power it back up. If it still maintaining a link move it to the edge of the range of the router and in between the router and the PCs you want to extend the range to. The power down it very inportant. |

TIA Save the money - opver the WRE54G - Buy a second WRT54G and either run it in client bridge mode (single ethernet connection, full connection speed) or in WDS mode - like the WRE54G (4 ethernet ports, full radio client, 1/2 wireless speed)
A WRT54G costs $49, a WRE54G costs over $100 -- »aerobatix.webhop.net |
