DCT-6412 Sync. Problem

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am running a HD projector (720P) along with a DCT-6412. The DCT is set to 720P. The unit will not sync up to the projector whenever the DVI switchbox (Gefen HDTV 4X1) is switched to another source, then back. One other 720P source has no issues with the switch box but when ever the switch box is set back to the DCT source the sync is out (1/4 of the image that should be on the left of the screen appears on the right of the screen). To fix the problem the DCT must be turned off, then back on. This problem occurs with the 720P output only (1080i is fine). The problem is not with the switcher/repeater because the problem still occurs with the cable connected directly to the projector (bypass the switch box).

Motorola will not provide assistance directly. Shaw has replaced the box, but it did not solve the problem, but it did introduce a new problem. The first box would convert all channels (analogue, digital and of course HD channels) to the DVI output, where as the new box will only output the HD channels (via DVI out). I suspect the firmware was out of date on the new box.

1. Does anyone know of a fix for the Sync. problem?
2. What is the latest firmware version?
3. What is the procedure to update the firmware?

Re: DCT-6412 Sync. Problem

DVI has two-way communication. The box and TV talk back and forth to determine compatibility. Switching like that probably confuses the cable box. You could try unplugging/replugging the DVI cable, although that is probably no better than turning the box off and on.

The current DCT6412 firmware is 9.15, although it's still being rolled out. 9.12 is still the most common. Someone reported having a 9.17. The box should automatically update when it's authorized if it was not up to date.

Re: DCT-6412 Sync. Problem

Update.
Upon going into the set up menu and changing the settings, 480P, 1080i and back to the 720P setting, has corrected one problem. The 6412 will now output all channels to the DVI output.

The synch problem persits. The problem is there with the output feeding the projector directly, so the switch box/repeater cannot be the cause. Also, a DVD player with DVI output (Set to 720P) works without issue through the switch box.

Welcome to DVI. This is one of the reasons why they are abandoning it. It's a pain in the butt to get it to work properly as it was never designed to do what it is currently doing. You'll have to deal with this issue until they can nail it down. It's a bummer but not much you can do about it.

Do you mean that HDMI will be less prone to these sorts of problems and be more "agreeable" to source-to-display switching ... ?

From what I understand yes, it's supposed to be, but also backwards compatible so that they don't piss everyone off, again.
