Everytime I've tried using Pest Patrol it doesn't work worth a damn so I just uninstall it too. Why waste my time with a product that doesn't do what it advertises. I've long used Ad-Aware, but right *before* the recent Lavasoft/WhenU spat added Spybot S&D to the mix -- and found that the "resident" feature is really nice.  I also have the M$ anti-spyware beta around here somewhere, but haven't installed it yet...
That said, I rarely get spyware in the first place, as I use Firefox and not IE and generally avoid the types of software (P2P apps, etc.) that carry it (and when I *do* torrents and so on I use open-source stuff)...
