Re: Won't Fly

Consumers will go where they can get the best deal. If DVR set top boxes offer the most customizable features and satellite companies or other cable companies offer more features for less money then the consumer will flock to them. The cable companies would be better off controlling these things in the set top boxes that they offer or simply offer the better set top boxes for more money if people want to skip the commercials.

Its the VOD, people... verizon is banking on the the some flavor of VOD will be a viable service, ie massive video 'rentals' for a service fee (ie easier than scouring the vast internet for the copyright violation versions at poorer quality) The cablecompanies hope to move into a more interactive vod with a broadband connection for viewing and server based storage-streaming which is closer to what people want rather than channel based vod (shows on a particular cable channel, ie soproanos for hbo, etc...)

This will cause some consolidation on various premium channels by causing people to think if they really wanna buy so many movie 'broadcast channels' or pay less than 1/3 the price of all you can eat streaming vod, stored remotely on server "storage farms" available 24/7 on your schedule, no the broadcast companies. These channels will have to compete for those dollars, who knows maybe some relaity tv on those channels too, hahahahahhaa!!

Of course, if they still stick me with the bulk of a set-top box I won't be happy. I realize some sort of module will be needed, but please make it small.
How do you expect to be able to use the dvr service without the cable box? Does your tv do video on demand / interactive tv over cable by itself?
I don't think you read the second part of the statement you quoted.
nope sorry didnt, but still, what else besides a cable box do you think they would give you? Its most likely just an on demand channel. that is the point, to not need to give out new boxes, instead use the same digital ones.

You can't record VOD with the COX DVR. Maybe with Tivo, but not with the cox DVR.

It would be akin to duplicating rental movies. Need you be reminded that isn't legal?

um, I record VOD with Cox. Your TW stuff must really suck.
It doesn't "suck" they just disable the record function for premium VOD. As I said before, it doesn't really bug me.

I'm hip to this idea. You already can't record VOD
Hmmm...I record VOD all the time, but not with Comcast's DVR. TiVo and a programmable remote with macro capability makes it a one-button affair. Then burn to DVD on the same box. Life is good.
Yeah, I'm poor =) I use TWC's DVR because I don't have the cash for a Tivo.

I'm hip to this idea. You already can't record VOD, but that's okay with me. Anything that reduces the number of devices in my living room is a good thing.

Of course, if they still stick me with the bulk of a set-top box I won't be happy. I realize some sort of module will be needed, but please make it small.

More like elimination of the lessor watched channels that nobody watches.

Plus it locks them into that provider. If they switch they must get a new device.

Also, all of what you record stored on a cable company controlled box? You would not think that they may gather any sort of numbers on what you watch? Just think of some of your favorite TV channels eliminated because nobody was recording any shows on that channel.

It is the future. Lower TCO for both the CableCo, and the end user.

People want DVRs, they want control of what they record and when.
