 HP Pavilion Notebook Possibilities

Greetings!

I've a friend with an HP Pavilion XH455 who wishes to upgrade the laptop as much as possible. Currently it has to be wiped due to a corrupted registry and lots and lots of viri, trojans, and spyware.

I see from the specs that it can hold as much as 512mb RAM (it has two 128mb cards currently), but does the later bios allow it to use more than that? The bios showing in the setup is PhoenixBIOS GD.M1.05. I see that .08 was released 03-2002, but there's no docs describing the changes.

It has a 20gb hard drive, what is the largest it can see?

I've searched through the HP support pages and cannot find anything that tells me what processor the laptop has. Beyond opening the thing up, how ho I tell this? Is there a place on the HP site where I can give the serial number and get back the specs and components at the time of sale?

Is there anyone successfully running XP on a Pavilion XH455?

Lastly, she's interested in selling it and getting something newer and faster. I've searched the internet and Ebay but not found a single XH455 for sale. Not knowing what processor the notebook has, I can't compare it effectively aginst similar ones. Could someone point me in the right direction here?

Many thanks!

John

Yes, I put XP on an XH455 a few months back for my Uncle and he is happy with it. He had ME, viruses that you cannot imagine, trojans, and everthing in between. I found that upgrading someone to XP and teaching them how to update their OS and antivirus, there will be fewer problems down the road for them.

So, back to your question...Yes, you can put XP on there. You may need to get some drivers after install from HP/Compaq, but it is no biggie.
