As mentioned in the piece, if you have both enabled on the client and you try to contact another box for service, both types of connectivity are attempted.
That's how the old shares with the new.
If it's an XP box trying to share with a 98 machine, for example, and the XP box has NBT enabled, the XP box will send requests both to port 445 and to the NBT ports.
