 [connection] continued SF bay area problem for me!

Since the DNS disaster last week, I have not been able to resync my modem. It is a Motorola SB5100 and I get 3 solid greens with the 'online' light flashing. XP reports as being 'connected to Comcast HSI' in pop up box but i am not able to browse. I instead get an alert pop up box the says www.whatever.com 'could not be found.' I have power-cycled without luck. I tried my original WebStar cable modem that came with the service...same problem so modem is ruled out as cause. SNR ratio is 40 dB, Power lvl is 17dB and upstream power lvl is 44dBmv. The modem log repeats the following errors: TFTP failed - request sent - no response, ToD request sent - no response, SYNC timing synchronization failure - failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing.

Is there anything I can do while waiting for a tech to come in FIVE days (Thur)?

Please help me!!!!

Not sure if this helps, but none-the-less, here goes:

I too am in the SF BAy Area. I have a Motorola SB5100 modem and Di624 router, and the Comcast Gold Tier. I have had intermittant connectivity problems the past 3 weeks. After the second truck roll all has been well. Tech increased my downstream power from -1 to +3 dBmV by installing a preferential splitter on my incoming line where it splits to tv and modem. Seems odd that this would have made much difference, as I understand the acceptable downstream power range to be +15 dBmV to -15dBmV, with optimum being near the middle of the span. According to the Tech, an improper downstrean signal could cause the modem to periodically lose sync with the Comcast system, resulting in intermittant connection issues.

I'm not sold on this as the answer, but none-the-less, I havent had anymore issues. You can see from my connection monitor that things have improved greatly since last week Satuday when the Tech was here. Perhaps it has more to do with Comcast working the post Bedrock conversion kinks out of the system?

Looking at your signals posted, it appears that your downstream power is above the high side of the range (at 17 dBmV). I understand that adding a splitter upstream of your modem (even if the third port of the splitter is left open [unconnected to anything]) would drop your signal level a bit, and may put it in the optimum range. Again, this may not be the answer, but it is certainly another variable ruled-out.

Also, do you have a router between the PC and modem? Oddly enough, I did not lose my connection during last weeks DNS disaster. I guess I was lucky enough to be one of the 5% of the US that didnt.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try the splitter as soon as I find one (somewhere buried in a closet). Seems strange that all my probs would occur after the network came back up after the DNS server mess. I think we had quite a bit of rain here in SF during that time...maybe I'll check out my wiring. It runs out a front wall and across a flat roof on a row house. Could a inline connection sitting in a puddle of water explain this????
