| Got asked to do a site survey, now what?
Hey guys, I got asked to do a wireless site survey (internal) for a company doing an install in a hotel.
So, how do I do that and what are they wanting to see in a report?
I asked but they couldn't give me any details. Kinda lame I know.
Just run over with my laptop and see what I can find for existing networks?
This is a two story hotel with 65 rooms. They are bringing in a high speed connection and want to do it wireless for the hotels.
I'd ask in the wireless forum but SITE SURVEY seemed like I'd get better help in here?
Mods, move if necessary! Thanks, BrianV -- More power never hurt anything. |

| Google, my friend!
Here are a few of the results that I came up with. I think that they should give you an idea on how to proceed:

| reply to Brianv5 Ahh, yes. Google. Sorry, I panicked and came here first!
So basically, I'm going to setup an AP somewhere in the hotel, walk around with my laptop and netstumbler and record my results on the floorplan?
Sound right? -- More power never hurt anything. |

| reply to Brianv5 Cool. Went off without a hitch. Took my Dell AP and my laptop with Netstumbler.
Took a floor plan that they had, marked where I tested and the signal I got at each location. I'll load it up into a visio and send it off to them.
Its a gig I got from computerrepair.com. Not a bad deal, $75 to go do a site survey. I'll do the next one faster and better!
Thanks for the info, worked great. -- More power never hurt anything. |

| reply to Brianv5 The provider asked if I wanted to do the install. I don't know what gear they are going to use and I'm sure I'll have fun putting antennas in the drop ceiling!
The hotel owner is going to share out his RR business connection. Not as fast as residential but its the proper connection for sharing (according to his TW rep).
Now I'm off to do a visio and make it look pretty. -- More power never hurt anything. |

I have one and it makes life "so much easier"!

The hotel owner is going to share out his RR business connection. Not as fast as residential but its the proper connection for sharing (according to his TW rep). I hope that it is FAST...'cuz on the weekend, it is going to DIE.
I suggest that you have at least 1500/1000 or so, and I would advise him of the fact in advance. Just because it is fast for him does not mean that it is going to be fast when 20-30 people get online. -- A is A |

| reply to Brianv5 Yes, very lucky on the drop ceilings...
We have 9 properties and just picked up 2 more..We are going to have to do outside AP's mounted on light poles to make the most recent job work correctly...

John is absolutely right. We always run RR 1.5mb connections. It does get cramped on a 768k easily.
Also, what gateway are they planning on using? Have you put any thought into a back end OSS? Or do they have that?
If they dont, I would recommend they get something otherwise you as the installed will get the 3am phone calls.."I'm illterate, but i really need to surf my porn! HELP!"
ehehehe...it happens..trust me!:D |

1 edit | reply to Brianv5 I'm assuming the "provider" who is out of Atlanta has everything ready to go. I don't know what they are using for auth or security or even antennas. Given what I saw last night a couple of omni's should do the trick.
I had my Dell wireless running in the lobby, he had a Linksys in his office. I lost his Linksys signal WAY before I lost my dell. I moved it around a couple times and took some more readings till I got a good picture.
The second floor ceiling has attic access, which I'm hoping will make those installs as easy as the drop ceiling!
I think his connection is 3000/512. Downloads should be fine, not sure about up though. -- More power never hurt anything. |
