1 edit | McAfee Personal Firewall Question
I installed McAfee's Personal Firewall Pro trial version this morning. So far I like it and I'm thinking of purchasing McAfee's Security Suite because I like McAfee VS 9.
I do have a question for anyone who is familiar with this firewall. In Internet Applications, I have Permissions set for all applications at Outbound Access Only. But every time I close the firewall GUI and open it again, McAfee Personal Firewall Console is changed to Allow Full Access. Why does this happen? Doesn't allowing full access mean the application is acting as a server?
Thank you.
Edit...Just found out that after rebooting just about all applications went back to Allow Full Access. This can't be good, right? |

| Possibly by design, to ensure that it is never blocked in rule. I think most other firewalls have those hard coded rules to ensure smooth operation

Hopefully there are some McAfee firewall users out there. |

| I saw your edit. It might ok for McAfee own to be allowed full acces but for all of them? That is not good i agree.
try also their forum (link is for PFP6 or »forums.mcafeehelp.com/ to see other versions) »forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewforum.···5ced9eec
to see if that is a known issue/bug and if there is an update/patch/workaround

| reply to Patruk I also use the McAfee's firewall. All apps are set as outbound only but yes, Mcafee's are always full access. I've changed it to outbound but lo and behold, like magic, it's back to full access. Personally it doesn't bother me and I believe Cudni is right when he says it's probably to ensure smooth operation. Outside of that I think it's an excellent firewall and so is VS9 as an antivirus. You should be happy with both. -- To Think or not to Think: That is the real question. VoicePulse 07/29/04 |

My biggest concern about the Allow Full Access setting, is it letting applications act as a server? Other than that, I guess I don't care if an application has full access or not. |

| reply to Patruk Wow. I don't know what the hell happened, but it wasn't good.
I left my computer for a couple of hours and when I came back, I couldn't connect to any web sites. I'm have Comcast cable. First thing I thought of was to change all settings back to Allow Full Access and reboot. That didn't help. Next, I tried exiting McAfee firewall. That didn't help. Only other option was to uninstall the firewall. Uninstalled it, rebooted, still no connection. Very pissed off at this point. Clicked on my trusted GoBack, reverted to before McAfee firewall install, and everything working fine again.
Reinstalled Outpost Pro and I will stay with that. I don't know if it was just something to do with McAfee firewall not liking my machine or what, but I'm not going to reinstall it again to find out. |

| Hopefully you were aware that Comcast had a national outage last night. No one could connect unless you changed your servers. Check out the Comcast HSI forum. Have to agree with you about Go Back. Yes it is very trusted here. Saved my behind a few times over the years. Wouldn't be without it. -- To Think or not to Think: That is the real question. VoicePulse 07/29/04 |

Thanks for that info danny9. Maybe it was just a coincidence that as I was reverting my HD with GoBack, the outage was fixed. Maybe I'll give McAfee firewall another try. |
