The title say it. Is it possible to get SBC DSL without the Yahoo content? |

| Well, yeah. Just don't visit www.yahoo.com
Okay, seriously...I have SBC DSL, I have an sbcglobal email address. I use Thunderbird (others use Outlook) to handle my email and Firefox to browse (others use IE).
Point being, you don't get any Yahoo content without going to it. -- The funny thing about firemen...night and day they're always firemen |

| reply to lewinstl Hello. I just saw another post by you concerning Valuenet. I also was a Valuenet customer, and so was a nephew of mine. My service stopped on April 4th, Monday of last week. So did my nephew's service. We had been wondering what happened with Valuenet, for we hadn't been being charged for service for months, emails went unanswered, and the phone was disconnected. Do you have any more info?
I signed up for SBC's DSL Pro. I had called SBC Tuesday of last week and it was supposed to be up yesterday, but it turned out that 2 hours after I placed my service order it was canceled. I just found that out Monday, so I had to re-order and my new date is the 18th, next Monday. This time I got a courtesy call to that effect, so I think the order is actually going through this time.
As the other person mentioned and pointed out in the FAQ's, no Yahoo software is necessary, and I don't plan on installing any of it.
Actually, it was SBC's Yahoo connection, plus the static IP that Valuenet offered that led me to Valuenet instead of SBC in the first place. I was originally using Direct TV's DSL service, had only been using it for two weeks when that email came about DTV dropping their DSL division. I went with Valuenet, and the service was fine, no complaints there. The package I took was very similar in price and service to DTV's at the time. But, I had been thinking about switching to SBC for the past month or so anyway what with this $29.95 deal for Pro, but was waiting to find out what was going on with Valuenet. After I was disconnected, that pushed me into going ahead for SBC's Pro plan. |

| reply to lewinstl I was with valuenet from the time DSL was first available in STL. I have heard that Joe Yu died. I don't know if that is true or when it happened if it is true. I have not been billed since last Aug. I didn't notice since I just check my bank statements for things that shouldn't be there, not for things that aren't being paid by should be.
My service was lost last Thursday the 7th. A weird thing happened that day. I got an automated call that day from SBC saying my service order had been completed. I called a rep and found out that an order for SBC DSL had been placed and then canceled within a few minutes. No record of who place the order.
I am still trying to decide to go with SBC or with DSLExtreme or maybe Loudband. All my friends are recommending Charter. I really dislike all cable companies, so I think I'll pass on that. |

| Thanks for the response. I knew there had to be others out there that were using Valuenet besides me and my nephew. I had been wondering what was going on with Valuenet, and when I saw both your posts here and at the other forum where you mentioned he had passed away, I thought I'd see if you knew any details about it.
I knew Joe had been working it by himself last I saw. That was true when I signed up with Valuenet in 2003, anyway. It was around last October or so when my nephew noticed he was no longer being billed, called me, and asked if same was going on with me. Turned out neither of us were being billed since last August, just like with you. I figured it was just a temporary glitch in the billing and that it would catch up to us sooner or later. Plus, they were doing that tunnel construction on Lindbergh right by where Valuenet's located, and I also wondered if that might have had something to do with it, like a power interruption messing up his account records or something.
Then in Feb., my nephew needed some DNS changes and found out then that emails were going unanswered, phone was disconnected, and we still weren't being charged. When I found that out, my first guess was that possibly Valuenet went out of business, maybe because of SBC's cheaper pricing these last couple of years. Seemed feasible to me, anyway. So I thought that possibly things were going to keep running until Valuenet's newest billing period with SBC ran out, or something like that. It took months for DTV to shut down after I received their notice. I decided to wait things out and see what developed. I notice the email servers are still running. I expect those to go down any time now too.
When my connection dropped last week, later that same evening I received a courtesy call from SBC like you did. I hadn't ordered any changes to my service. I called the next day to check that out, and was told an SBC affiliate/reseller had put a cancel order on my DSL. That is when I put in an order for SBC's Pro plan, the one that turned out to be canceled 2 hours later. My nephew had also called them the same day I did, and was told the same thing about a cancel order being put through by one of their affiliate/resellers.
I have others around me using SBC DSL, they all like it. I've been lurking here in the SBC forum for a long time, longer than I've been registered here. The help and support I've seen here in these forums has also helped me both recommend SBC to others and ultimately go with them myself. Is one reason why I decided to just go with SBC instead of SBC resellers this time and have it done with. Plus I really like the looks of that higher speed $29.95 Pro plan deal.
I went with Direct TV to get away from Charter. I liked it better when it was American Cable in my part of town. Things started going downhill when ATT and then Charter ended up running it, IMO. So cable broadband isn't an option I want to go with because of it being owned by Charter now.
Good luck with whoever you decide to go with. |

| reply to lewinstl I asked for my line readings on the SBCdirect forum to help make a decision. According to the tech who answered, I can't get the 3.0 service. My line is good to about 1900. I'm 13,000 feet from the CO.
I looked at a lot of potential ISP's here on DSLreports. I had some really good answers to my questions from DSLExtreme. When I found out I couldn't get the 3.0 service from SBC, I decided to go with DSLExtreme. The price is only a couple bucks more than SBC, but they have better reviews. But SBC's reviews have certainly gotten better in the past few years, at least here in STL. I would probably have been happy with SBC, too, but I like to spread the money around. I'll go with this 1 year contract then shop around again. |

| Great. I've heard that DSLExtreme provides good service too. IIRC, they picked up more than a few of us ex-DirectTV DSL'ers.
New weirdness. I still have my dsl modem I got from Valuenet hooked up, and my ADSL light is solid green again. Which means SBC must have provisioned my line already. But it's too soon for next Monday's order, and a day late for the order that was made last Tuesday and was canceled 2 hours later. This is getting to be real Fun. Sure wish I had my SBC modem, the 5100B sitting here already. Not sure if the thing I got from Valuenet will do the trick for now, since Joe said he had to configure it. Am mighty tempted to plug in SBC's registration name and password into my router and see if I can access the registration page and get my account set up...
Good Luck with your DSLExtreme. |

| I probably will. Even though SBC package should be showing up pretty soon. Curiosity plus a desire to get back off this old MSN dialup account of mine is pretty strong. I checked the SBC website for availability on my phone number, it came back stating I already have DSL on that line. So it definitely is good to go.
Dynamic IP is pretty easy. If you have a router, it can probably be set up for dynamic IP and keep the connection alive. Most router manufacturers will have instructs on their website. Mostly just a matter of setting router for Dynamic and entering user name and password. Is how I'll be doing it with my little Dlink Di-604, most likely. With the 5100B modem SBC is sending me, I have a couple of choices on how I can do it, with the modem or with the router. Instructs for both ways are in the SBC FAQ's here.
DSLExtreme Support section is here: »www.dslextreme.com/support/dsl.php
They cover a few other ways of doing it. |

| reply to lewinstl Does anyone know what happened to the valuenet guy (Joe Yu)? I've heard on other message boards that he died but haven't been able to verify that. I believe his real name was Obulmo Yunkil but apparently that and his apparently unfortunate demise are just about all anyone knows about him.
Just wondering what the whole story is. |

It works both ways with the 5100b as long as you do not have PPPoE on BOTH the modem and router.

When the PPPoE is on the modem, the router should be set for dynamic in order to pull an IP address from the modem.
The interface between the network and the connection device has to be PPPoE... -- Norman ~A deam, dream, no dream ~Voices of the night go across the forest ~A dream, dream, no dream ~Good night my good child |
