Norton Internet Sec and AOL Buddy List

Same problem!

AOL 8.0, NIS 2005, and the buddy list would not display, and I could not send IM's. Also AOL's Radio would not open.

Silly me thought it was AOL, so I upgraded to 9.0. NOw I have all the new crap on the computer. Still didn't work. I was on live chat with AOL for 3 hours, 6 different sessions, and none of them could ifgure it out.

All of the AOL programs listed in Norton are set to Permit All.

WTF

i have been having the same problem using NIS 2005 and AOL, i have tried w/ AOL 6 and 7 and the buddy list window just won't open if NIS is running.

please don't suggest that i upgrade AOL cause the newer versions install so much extra crap that i can't stand and also seem to crash my cable modem for some reason, so i refuse to install anything higher than 7.

i have checked around on the symantec site but don't see any reference to a "SynNTR.exe" file, can you post a link to it or tell me where on the site i would find it. just as a side note, some1 had asked the original poster if AIM was working, i don't seem to have any trouble w/ AIM, only w/ the buddy list within the AOL software and all other features of the AOL program seem to function ok aside from the horrendously slow downloads w/ norton anti-virus enabled but thats a whole other problem...

Ahh, just noticed the comment about it working for a day or so after the Norton install. I went from AOL 9.0 to 8.0 at work after an attempted security upgrade blew up in our faces. After about a day or so, my buddy list stopped working. I don't have permission to turn off the firewall since I'm at work (AOL support's only suggestion), and I wouldn't ask for permission even if I was sure I'd get it.

This seems to be a problem that a number of people are having with no luck resolving. And THIS is the only forum where people even tried to be helpful! Most places people just say "But nobody's forcing you to use AOL and Norton!!!" ...Except, I AM being forced to use them. It's what the company has decreed, so it's what I have to use.

Thanks to everyone in here for having a useful forum instead of just a place for the arrogant to slam people who are stuck with inconvenient software.

I'm getting the same issues with Norton 2005. My buddy list won't show up, I can't browse any AOL features and it tells me that AOL does not have a full established connection to do anything. I unblocked any and everything I could find, turned off ad blocker and whatever else I could think of and it STILL doesn't let me do anything. I just got fed up and uninstalled Norton. Even when I roll back to other AOL versions I get the same junk. I'm not even going to bother with AOL tech support since they're never any help to me. It's funny how AOL works for about a day or so with newly installed Norton.. but reboot.. give it a day.. and it goes to hell.

I am using AOL 8.0, not 9.0 hence a lot of those services dont exist in 8.0. WHat i did was give AOL all TCP and UDP access to and from with all ports. Basically giving AOL free access in and out on all ports. I thought this would do it, but it didnt.

I logged onto AOL and could not get the buddy list to pop up. If i shut the firewall off, the buddy list pops up so something is blocking it still yet I have no clue.

Funny enough I have AOL's stand-alone IM application and I can log into that with no issue.

I feel with every iteration of Norton, the program gets more bloated and blocks more than the last without helping the user out.

Any help again greatly appreciated

Just curious.. did you have an older version of NIS installed before installing NIS 2005. How did you you do the install. DId you first manually uninstall the older version and then install 2005 ? OR did you just run 2005 and have it automatically uninstall the older version.

Stever80,

I just ran in to a few issues with NIS 2005. The solution to my problem was to download SynNTR.exe from Symantec's site and completely uninstall all Symantec products. Then I followed their instructions to the letter (including booting with Selective Restart to run the Install) and went through the myriad of updates from LU. It was a pain, but it cured the original problem, and it appears to have cleared up some I was unaware of because my machine is performing better than it has since I did the first install of NIS 2005. I know that the install says it uninstalls all of the other products, but it leaves hidden files and registry keys and class settings that it appears can only be deleted correctly by using Add/Remove uninstall followed by SymNRT.exe. This may not solve your issue, but I know of at least 2 other NIS 2005 users besides myself who have experienced some weird stuff with the new NIS. Both of them did the complete uninstall/reinstall bit and cured their problems as well.

check out Part 3 & Part 5 on this AOL Help site....

-->Part 3: Symptoms of firewall problems

If your firewall is preventing AOL software applications from functioning normally, you may be:

Unable to connect to the America Online® service
Unable to see your Buddy List® window when you sign on
Unable to send and/or receive instant messages
Unable to browse the Web using AOL
Unable to listen to Radio@AOL
Unable to play other music or videos

-->Part 4: AOL software applications

The following list describes software applications used by AOL that can make TCP/IP connections, potentially get monitored by a firewall, and be prohibited from functioning properly:

AOL Software........................... File Name
America Online® 9.0 Optimized.......... waol.exe
AOL® Connectivity Service (ACS)........ acsd.exe
AOL® Companion ........................ companion.exe
Top Speed™ Web acceleration technology. aolwbspd.exe
AOL® Tray Icon......................... AOLTray.exe
AOL® Setup............................. aolsetup.exe
AOL® Internet Access Controls.......... spcauth.exe
Radio@AOL
AOL Embedded Media Player...... AOLMediaPlaybackControl.exe
You've Got Pictures® Screensaver....... ygpsstra.exe
AOL® Coach player...................... AOlNySEV.exe
RealPlayer®............................ realplay.exe
QuickTime® software suite.............. qttask.exe
....................................... QuickTimePlayer.exe
....................................... QuickTimeUpdater.exe

Part 5: Troubleshooting firewall problems

1. Determine which Internet applications are being monitored.
Open your firewall's security setting area and look through the Internet applications listed.
Compare the list of Internet applications to the list of AOL software applications shown above.
If the AOL software application is not listed, locate each of these files on your PC using the firewall's application feature, and grant each AOL application access to the Internet.

2. Select a security level.
A firewall will offer different levels of security to associate with each known Internet application (for example: Low, Medium, and High). If AOL is having trouble connecting you to the service, set all of the AOL software applications to Low. The Low setting may also be described as Allow Full Access or Permit All.

3. Test your changes.
Once these suggestions and permissions have been made, try to connect to the AOL service again. If these attempts fail, the firewall may need to be disabled until further troubleshooting help can be obtained by the firewall vendor. If you are in an institutional environment, contact your network administrator for assistance.

here are some other ideas/things to try...

are you running any other firewall, like the Windows Firewall? if so, shut it down

here is a Symantec toll-free #... 800-441-7234 with long wait times (except early morning hours) but users have had success with it

one Norton Internet Security 2005 user who is having success with AOL 9.0 listed these firewall settings that you might wish to compare...

*********************
Firewall Program Control settings are on Automatic Program Control and listed are:
AOL Connectivity Service
AOL Core Application
AOL Radio
All are multiple category.

Firewall privacy settings are at medium. (Internet Options are medium-high.)
*********************

what about Parental Control? is it by any chance set to block AIM by default?

i'd be interested in your response to the suggestion proffered above re NAV internet options settings for Instant Messenger

good luck

well, i don't have AOL and i am not using NIS, but i would suggest also looking in the NAV internet options settings to make sure you have IM protected. somehow if that is not enabled it may be causing trouble

and doesn't AOL have a boatload of help files on firewalls?

have you opened the NIS readme.txt file and looked for either known conflicts or possible solutions to AOL troubles? try that

to answer your earlier question, i would always advise having the most current LU executable.

and i would also quit turning off the firewall, even periodically. you already know what happens when it is off. work on configuring it, but refrain from shutting it off.

i am sorry that i do not have more specific info to assist you

Havent tried that. this affects the buddy list with the AOL application version 8.0. If firewall is shut off it pops up, firewall turns back on, buddy list goes away.

I need to try this with AIM as well. I assume the same affect but cant be positive until I try it

McAffee in my opnion is not good. Secondly I already had Norton on the machine and to stay in the lines of consistency, i am using Norton 2005.

Boblandy, interesting article from Norton. I have installed all updates and it is still happening. I guess I will have to doublecheck to make sure. If not, do you think an update of liveupdate executable would do it?

Possibly start fiddling with the firewall settings for the AOL program? I am really confused here why it would happen just for the buddy list, so odd.

Any more help greatly appreciated as always

is Instant Messenger working?

if not, perhaps AOL Instant Messenger does not start or connect after installing Norton Internet Security will help.

if you are experiencing any problem with running LiveUpdate, take a look at How to use LiveUpdate with America Online.

perhaps you just need to obtain the latest program updates

Guys,

I installed Norton Internet Security 2005 after my 2004 expired. I noticed after i added my router to the trusted zone in the firewall that when I logged on to AOL, i could not see my buddy list. After i disabled the firewall the buddy list popped up. Once I re-enabled the firewall the buddy list disappears.

Weird. This did not happen with 2004. What is new with 2005 that is causing this. Is there a port that it needs, what is being blocked that is not allowing the buddy list through. Everything else on AOL works find to my knowledge.

Any help greatly appreciated
