McAffee in my opnion is not good. Secondly I already had Norton on the machine and to stay in the lines of consistency, i am using Norton 2005.
Boblandy, interesting article from Norton. I have installed all updates and it is still happening. I guess I will have to doublecheck to make sure. If not, do you think an update of liveupdate executable would do it?
Possibly start fiddling with the firewall settings for the AOL program? I am really confused here why it would happen just for the buddy list, so odd.

| Havent tried that. this affects the buddy list with the AOL application version 8.0. If firewall is shut off it pops up, firewall turns back on, buddy list goes away.
I need to try this with AIM as well. I assume the same affect but cant be positive until I try it |

| well, i don't have AOL and i am not using NIS, but i would suggest also looking in the NAV internet options settings to make sure you have IM protected. somehow if that is not enabled it may be causing trouble
and doesn't AOL have a boatload of help files on firewalls?
have you opened the NIS readme.txt file and looked for either known conflicts or possible solutions to AOL troubles? try that
to answer your earlier question, i would always advise having the most current LU executable.
and i would also quit turning off the firewall, even periodically. you already know what happens when it is off. work on configuring it, but refrain from shutting it off.

here are some other ideas/things to try...
are you running any other firewall, like the Windows Firewall? if so, shut it down
here is a Symantec toll-free #... 800-441-7234 with long wait times (except early morning hours) but users have had success with it
one Norton Internet Security 2005 user who is having success with AOL 9.0 listed these firewall settings that you might wish to compare...

AOL Connectivity Service
AOL Core Application
AOL Radio
All are multiple category.
Firewall privacy settings are at medium. (Internet Options are medium-high.)

what about Parental Control? is it by any chance set to block AIM by default?

| I am using AOL 8.0, not 9.0 hence a lot of those services dont exist in 8.0. WHat i did was give AOL all TCP and UDP access to and from with all ports. Basically giving AOL free access in and out on all ports. I thought this would do it, but it didnt.
I logged onto AOL and could not get the buddy list to pop up. If i shut the firewall off, the buddy list pops up so something is blocking it still yet I have no clue.
Funny enough I have AOL's stand-alone IM application and I can log into that with no issue.
I feel with every iteration of Norton, the program gets more bloated and blocks more than the last without helping the user out.
