I think most here will agree that several applications are needed to be covered adequately.
There have actually been quite a few threads about this. And an interesting article from the April issue of PC World where they did a little testing of their own. (This was also posted several times, so you may have already read it).
My new favorite is Microsoft Antispyware. (And also one of theirs, but wasn't included in the chart at the time of testing).
