| After hours of head banging, found the solution:
The Trend Micro Anti-Virus Pattern File 2.594.00 4/22/2005 15:41:52 is corrupt!!!
Yep. Update to 2.596 will fix the problem.
While I do think Trend has much better products that most other AV companies, this sometimes happens. It seems at least once a year or so! Entirely frustrating!!!!! |

| reply to AirGig Yep, happened in my office Friday Apr 22 around 4pm PST All Windows XP stations unusable. A process is taking 100% of the processor time. Needed to disable Office Scan pattern 594. Around 7pm PST Trend releases pattern 596 that correctsthe problem. THe problem is PC's cannot even install the new pattern because busy
Restart in save mode and disable Office scan. |

1 edit | Well that really stinks. Pretty newsworthy I'd wager, since we've made big deals out of similar faux pas by other vendors... And this one sounds worse.

The Japan Times reports that a bug in Trend Micro's antivirus software has caused the CPUs of several important computers, including those at East Japan Railway, to grind to a halt. A bug free version was released on noon Saturday." From the article: "Kyodo News experienced LAN access failure from around 8:20 a.m. to shortly before noon. The Asahi Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun also had trouble with their LANs at their Tokyo and Osaka bureaus, but the problems did not affect editing or printing of their evening editions." I wonder why this hasn't gotten more DSLR attention.

It certainly makes a good argument against auto-updates. |

| Which is, of course, the problem. You almost can't use antivirus software effectively and give each new signature update due-diligence testing in your pre-production environment.
(Because, of course, it's best to update signatures every day, and few organizations have the wherewithal or inclination to go through that full round of tests every day.)
