 | [XP Pro] Corrupted Windows XP Pro Restore Point file All, I need assistance restoring a corrupted rstrui.exe file in Windows XP Pro.:( You probably know it is the executable for the Restore Point feature in Windows XP Pro.
I was wondering if anyone knows where or how I can get a replacement file, without having to do a complete Recovery on my IBM T42p laptop?
If I have to run the Recovery program it will format the hard drive, return the laptop to it's original condition, and worst of all is that I lose all data on the hard drive, plus have to reinstall all the software I've already loaded.:o
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Especially if you can point me to a web site where replacement files are available.:D

Results of solutions offered and answers to your questions: The sfc /scannow returned no error messages.:D System Restore function retuns no error messages.:D Haven't tried solution from Shootist because OS for all IBM laptops is located on a logical partition of the C drive and I don't know how to access it except by running Full Recovery program.
Problem = the Create Restore Point window opens, but will not create a new or restore an old Restore Point. It is my belief that somehow the rstrui.exe file has become corrupt. How would normal every day usage corrupt a Windows XP Pro system file? That's a question I'd like the answer to.
Solutions tried = numerous Google searches to locate a rstrui.exe file to copy to my laptop, no success to date.
Copied the rstrui.exe file from my Windows XP Pro desktop to laptop, but did not resolve the problem.
Laptop has 4 year warranty (1 year IBM + 3 year extended), only had laptop for 2.5 months so I called IBM tech support. They offered: 1. Uninstall Svc. Pk. 2, that was successful with warning that 8-10 programs might not/would not work afterwards; did it anyway. Then 2. Start, Run, c:\i386\winnt32.exe. IBM tech said it's a Repair rather instead of total Recover. Did not work, and found approximately 10 other files missing.:(
Amazingly in all other aspects the laptop functions just fine. I think running c:\i386\winnt32.exe did accomplish some good, but did not restore the rstrui.exe file.
Here's my first kick in the head - I own Symantec Ghost and a 160gb WD USB2 external HD and wasn't smart enough to do a backup of program files, Windows, entire hard drive, registry. In case you're wondering why I don't have a back-up to fall back on, now you know the truth. I'm ready for my first head kicking Mr. DeMill! When I can get this problem solved, hopefully without Full Recovery but will if absolutely necessary, guess what the first thing I'm doing is?;)
I don't want to run the Full Recovery as it formats the hard drive, installs Windows XP Pro without any updates and returns the laptop to it's original condition. I would have to install all Microsoft updates, all software I've installed.
Here's my second kick in the head or caboose, choose your location, I'm ready - I paid a Best Buy technician (Geek Squad) to configure the laptop to use the built-in wireless a/b/g capablity, cost $159.00. Only took him 20-30 minutes tops!
To be perfectly honest about it, I'm afraid that if I run the Full Recovery I won't be able to reconfigure the T42p laptop with wireless a/b/g capability by myself, and will be forced to spend another $159.00 having a BB tech do it.
Any other advice besides Full Recovery?

Can you check the System Restore Service:
Start > Run > services.msc > OK > then scroll down to the System Restore Service.
Is the System Restore Service set to "automatic" and is it "started"?
If the System Restore Service does not have a status of "Started" can you right-click the service and "Start" it?
Also, check the Event Viewer logs:
Go to Start > Run > Eventvwr then click on both Application and System, in the left-hand window.
Are there any errors or warnings, in the right-hand window, related to System Restore? If so double-click each event for more info on the event. |

 | reply to CatLover53 All,
When I posted yesterday I forgot to add one other thing I've done. One of the first places I tried to find a replacement or solution to my problem was at Microsoft, logical since it's a Windows command problem.
I located a Microsoft page advertising a book published in 2002 with an exerpt of Chapter 5, How To Tweak the Windows Registry. Table 5-16 indicates the Registry location for the "Values in XP Start Menu" as HKCU\Classes\Applications. I did a Regedit, and Find for rstrui.exe expecting to find it in the specified location, but it's not there. In fact I don't have an "Applications" sub-key of Classes. I have entries for rstrui.exe in other Registry locations, but not the location for the XP Start Menu which is where you start this specific Windows command function. That is a clear indication of a Registry problem.
Question = Does it matter from pc to pc where the Registry entry is for the command line that's missing from my laptop Registry for the rstrui.exe XP Start Menu item? I assume that all installations of Windows XP Pro create similar Registry entries, but that might not be correct.
Question = If I duplicate all of the Registry entries for rstrui.exe in my desktop Registry to my laptop Registry will it result in the restoring functionality to the command?
If anyone would like to look at Microsoft page with the VERY INTERESTING Registry tweaking information here's the URL. Tip = At the bottom of the page is a link to the previous page. You can get there manually by removing the "a" from 6232a.asp. Here's the URL:

The System Restore Service "was" started and in automatic mode. Thinking maybe if I stopped it then restarted it, it might start the service, I stopped it, but it will not restart. Definate problem.
After looking at the EventViewer for Application and Service I found more than enough errors and alerts to put them in a seperate posting.

 | reply to auggy All,
I'm listing any interesting entries in the Application and Service logs, in the order listed, from today's start-up. This is a very long post, I've used some of the html coding to make it a little easier to read.
These entries are from the Application log:
Error Message: "Hanging application rundll32.exe, version 5.1.2600.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000. Help & Support link offered no informatio, but says "No User Action Required." *** Seems stupid because it's obvious that the rundll32.exe file just experienced a problem! The Help and Support refers the User to the Microsoft web site for further assistance. Been there, did that, didn't find what I needed, BBR is a better resource.
Information Message: "Fault bucket 02096553" *** One of these entries seems to follow only certain types of Errors. Does Windows XP Assign numbers to Error Messages then puts them into the "Fault Bucket"?
Information Message: "The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( btwdins ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service started." *** Help & Support didn't give any information about "btwdins" or "between dins" or "between din". Question = What is btwdins?
Information Message: "The CI service attempted to startup but was suppressed because the DonotStartCiSvc registry parameter was set." *** After reading the entry in Help & Support I think this refers to a Content Indexing problem but the Help & Support entry didn't specify what the Content Indexing Service was trying to index. *** Could this entry be referring to the Indexing Service that I have turned on? If so, what parameter am I supposed to set?
Information Message: "The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( IBM Rapid Restore Ultra Service ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service started."
*** Is this entry referring to my Restore Point problem? If this entry does refer to my inability to create a Restore Point, why does it say Service started at the end, when the Service log shows System Restore Service stopped? Am I confused and the log is showing 2 different services?
Information Message: MS DTC started with the following settings: Security Configuration (OFF = 0 and ON = 1): Network Administration of Transactions = 1, Network Clients = 0, Distributed Transactions using Native MSDTC Protocol = 1, Transaction Internet Protocol (TIP) = 0, XA Transactions = 1
*** The Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator? settings are interesting. Monitor the Ntwk Admin's transactions, but not Network Clients, and use MSDTC protocol instead of Internet Transaction protocol. Keep in mind I don't know what transactions MDTC is actually monitoring, but wouldn't the Net Admin also be a Network Client? What transactions does MDTC monitor?
Error Message: "Security configuration was not backed up. Error 1208 to open database." *** Question = should I back up the security configuration? If so, how do I initiate that?
Warning Message: "The COM+ Event System attempted to fire the EventObjectChange::ChangedSubscription event but received a bad return code. HRESULT was 80040201." *** Don't know what this refers to.
Warning Message: "The COM+ Event System failed to create an instance of the subscriber partition:{41E90F3E-56C1-4633-81C3-6E8BAC8BDD70}!new:{D3938AB0-5B9D-11D1-8DD2-00AA004ABD5E}. CoGetObject returned HRESULT 80070422." *** Don't know what this refers to.
That is the end of the Application log for today's start up.
These entries are from the Service log:
Information Message: Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 5.01. 2600 Service Pack 1 Uniprocessor Free. *** I am still running Svc Pack 1 because when I tried installing Svc Pack 2 and it tries to create a Restore Point it cannot create one.
Error Message: DCOM got error "The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service. " attempting to start the service BITS with arguments "" in order to run the server: {4991D34B-80A1-4291-83B6-3328366B9097} *** The Service log doesn't show what executable program this error message is referring to. It indicates the User is System so which might indicate it's the Restore Point service?
Error Message: The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service failed to start due to the following error: The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service.
*** The reason this won't start is because the laptop is so screwed up that it can't download and install the update. In the Service log there are 4 entries where it logs failure to start. I don't know what the entry refers to with "The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service" because the update was never successfully downloaded. Maybe just enough did get downloaded and installed to make Windows XP Pro think it's there???
Error Message: The navapsvc service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the path specified.
*** This shouldn't be here because I had to uninstall Norton Internet Security/Norton Anti-Virus and cannot get either one to reinstall. Every time I try to install either program I get an error message telling me that the program cannot continue the installation. No reason is given. I think once again it's because the laptop is so screwed up. Very dangerous for me to be using a wireless laptop in an unprotected state, like I am.
Error Message: The ScriptBlocking Service service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the path specified.
*** After reading his error message I tried to start this service but failed. Error message said it cannot find the path.
Error Message: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: SAVRT SAVRTPEL *** SAVRT is a System function that is currently set to Manual. I don't know what it does.
*** After reading all of these errors and alerts to so many problems, I find myself wondering if I'm being stupid by continuing to mess around trying to get a fix or repair to this problem?
I also MUST consider that I'm using an this laptop in wireless mode totally unprotected since I uninstalled NIS2005 which contains NAV2005 and Firewall.
Any help or ideas about running a Repair opposed to a Recovery on an IBM ThinkPad will be much appreciated.

steve1aPremium,MVM join:2001-05-07 Berkeley, CA | Hmmm. it seems like IBM at least tried to walk through a low level recovery ie: without an actual reformat and that sounds like it was unsuccessful... It did just cross my mind as I was responding to another post... that a possible option might be installing SP2 on top of itself... This is possible if you download and use the network install download: »www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta···ylang=en
It's a pretty substantial download... but hey that is what broadband is for... I've been able to "restore" other lost functions (mostly with IE) ... it did work in my scenario...
I've never quite seen this "recommended" but I wasn't up to a reformat at least in the immediate. -- Got a VAIO? Visit the Village:»www.vaiovillage.com |

2 edits | reply to CatLover53 I think it would help if you could get SP2 installed, and any outstanding critical updates.
Here's a MS KB article with some general info on troubleshooting System Restore:
»support.microsoft.com/default.as···s;302796
As suggested in the article try running System Restore in Safe Mode.
Also, as suggested by steve1a , you could try turning "off" and back "on" System Restore, and reset the data store:
»support.microsoft.com/?kbid=267511
If System Restore does not work consider disabling System Restore and then try installing SP2.
You can also try installing SP2 in Safe Mode.
Also, try running System Restore from another user account (create one if necessary), to rule out a problem with your account.
If you haven't already consider backing up any critical data.
BTW, what version of NAV did you have installed? |

 | reply to auggy Steve & Auggy, after posting that mess yesterday I decided to do just what you suggest and was successful at reinstalling SVC PK 2, plus successfully downloaded all available updates. System Restore function even works.
However something still isn't quite right. I want to get everything working before I do a backup. I tried installing Norton Internet Security 2005. NIS2005 includes NAV2005 plus Firewall plus Spam blocker. For some reason the installation failed. Used Add/Remove and uninstalled, plus used Registry Mechanic to remove the left-over items always left behind after any uninstallation.
Then I figured maybe I could install NAV2005 just to have anti-virus protection, but that installation failed as well.
By then I'm getting not only frustrated but desperate to at least get anti-virus protection. Went to Symantec web site, downloaded trial versions of NIS2005 and NAV2005, figured that if I could get one of those installed and use it for the 90 day period I'd at least have protection for 90 days. Then I could uninstall the programs and install my own retail versions. Problem is that both installations failed!!:(
All installations start correctly, but when they all reach a point where they are installing "Feature: msxml3" that's when I get the installation failed message.
Right now I'm looking at all the information Microsoft has on msxml3 but can't seem to find the file itself to download. It has something to do with redistributable xml database version 3 files. I have a vague idea of what that is, so I'll keep looking.
The good news is that the laptop has been about 90% just by reinstalling Svc. Pk. 2 and all of the updates. I hope this last 10% won't give me too much trouble.
Does anybody have any idea about where to look or how to replace the msxml3 file? I've searched the laptop C drive and there's alot of .msi files, but apparently not the one needed for Symantec products.

I'm waiting to get the laptop completely fixed before I do any backups.
Auggy - Yes I've already used Nero and burned a CD-RW with the little data on the laptop. It came pre-loaded with NAV2004 which was good for 6 months. I uninstalled that and installed NIS2005.
