New versions of ZoneAlarm do out today

ZoneLabs should be releasing new versions of the ZoneAlarm firewall later today. I've included further information on that - along with IMPORTANT information for Google Toolbar users at the link below.

Thanks for the heads up. I will wait to see how this new version reacts before doing anything about it of course. The bit with the Google Toolbar is a really dumb thing to have to do, but I suspect that many, such as myself, will be doing it.

The reason you have to do this would make you even more irritable. But there is really no point in me making an issue of it - won't change the matter. I'd agree that I wouldn't be to happy if I used the Google toolbar.

As I mentioned in the IM. The only issues that may be outstanding - I say this since I'm just now getting back online and will be installing this latest build soon - those issues might be the FlashFXP issue and the speed related issue you mentioned above. ZoneLabs hasn't been able to reproduce customers results in regards to that. If you Google that problem ( zonealarm speed ). You'll get a few blog post I've done in relation to that as well. The speed issue is something I've reported for awhile now. But many ZoneAlarm customers aren't having an issue in regards to connection speeds when using the product. I know a few individuals in the »Broadband Tweaks forum would disagree with that statement. Honestly I don't agree with how they have handle the matter to be honest. I truly feel it is counter productive in regards to security and helping users solve their problem.

Since I've never had an issue in regards to speeds and ZoneAlarm. I'm most likely not going to be the person to ask if this issue has been resolved. The only way we will know for sure. Is the feedback customers give over the next few days and weeks.

"Reporting back to zap even if I said no"

I think you may be referring to a topic covered in a very long thread in the security forum. If set properly - ZoneAlarm never makes contact without your permission. This was hotly debated in the thread. Even after users were given the steps to take to make sure no contact was made. Again I can honestly say I've never see an contact I've not authorized.

Since this a separate issue from above. I'm going to start another comment instead of editing the one above. I saw this problem during private testing. And now with this gold build I'm running into it again. I had reported this to ZoneLabs. But maybe they needed more data from me.

I'm getting a blue screen of death every time I try to install this new build. I did the clean install method I always use. I've shut everything that is running down. I've checked my bios settings. But still no luck after two tries. I'll drop a picture of the error into this thread a little later.

Is anyone else seeing any problems when trying to install this build? My motherboard is a Soyo 7VBA133U. Running not so great Kingston value RAM 512MB. This is a hardware change from the last time I installed a new ZoneAlarm build. So I'm thinking that in fact may be the issue. I previously ran an old IBM board in this machine. I'm going to head out the Soyo site to see if there is a BIOS update. If there is - I'll try that as a solution.

I'm running Kaspersky Antivirus Pro for my antivirus. I tried disabling that fully before install. This resolved nothing. Just tried a third time to do an install. Again the system gives me a nice big blue screen of death. I haven't seen one of those in years. Since going to XP.

So it looks like I'm going to have to go back to the previous build for now. Which is something I don't like to do. I was thinking of cleaning off my drive and doing some Longhorn testing anyway. So with this issue - I might just do that soon.

Update - ZoneAlarm Security Suite version 5.5.062.011 ( the previous version ). Is back on this machine and running smoothly. So I feel I can assume something in the new build just doesn't like a piece of hardware or software on my machine. But some change they have made in the newest build would seem to be the cause ( in my opinion ). The previous build installed with no issues. My settings backup installed just fine.

Although I do have one little issue with the backup process. This has annoyed me for a bit. Why can't it remember the password I've set? And why can't it remember that I've chosen to hide the informative text of the left side of the interface? This is just a little thing that has annoyed me for some time. The password thing might be for security reasons though.

has anyone here tried the over the top installation?

used to be frowned upon, but i do believe that it is a smooth operation now, with the installer shutting down the true vector engine for you and prompting you if this is a clean install or an upgrade.

when i get around to upgrading ZAP in a day or two i plan to go this route.

wouldn't it be ironic if the users having difficulties with the full uninstall routine had success with the over the top method

Ive used over the top install since it first was recommended by ZoneLabs.
No probs so far, "knock knock"
I also wait a day or two with the latest upgrade.
Always does that:)

I will be looking forward to seeing what your results are. I've done it both ways, and since Iggy hasn't had problems up to this point, it will be good to find out what the best way might be for a new install. My inclination might have been a new install as it seems about time to clean things up and start afresh, but now I question if it really is. How ironic!

I've gone over the top past 5 upgrades now! No issues with that yet. Just clean your system and there should be no driver or registry issues.;)

Any good system/ registry cleaner should do the trick!

I performed an upgrade of ZAP last night and everything has been smooth today. One issue on the upgrade:

This PC has two accounts - an admin and a limited user (besides the safe mode administrator). While in the admin account I did a ZAP settings backup, deselected the load ZAP at startup and restarted the PC. Back in the admin account started the upgrade exe, the upgrade option was selected, selected restart to admin. All settings, including expert rules under firewall and individual applications were properly in this account. Next, restarting to the limited user account, all settings except the application expert rules were there. The firewall expert rule was still in place but two applications required input of the old rules manually. No big deal, I already had the rules saved in a graphics file just for this possibility.

Basically running well for all of today.

"since Iggy hasn't had problems up to this point"

I've had major problems with this build. lol. Read my post before this. I'm running the previous version of ZoneAlarm Security Suite now. Because this new build won't install.

As for the over the top install. The history on that has been mixed as most of us here are already are aware. I would agree that over the past few years. Most users have had success doing things that way. I've just gotten into the habit of using the /CLEAN method because most times I've ran a test build on this machine.

Nothing to work out. It's not on my end. Or at least this is how I see it. Since the previous build works on this machine with no problem. I'd assume that something in the new build is causing the issue. So I don't see how I'm going to work it out on my end. Hopefully someone at ZoneLabs will get back to me. And we get this tracked down. But my one contact is out of office at the moment. So it'll probably be a few days before I get any correspondence back.

friendly reminder... if you have product upgrading configured in preferences for manual, updating ZAP has always resulted in that setting reverting to automatic
