Re: [TWC] Roadrunner letter in the mail about uplo

How about a scan of the letter (with your name and other identifying info blacked out, of course!)
or at least the text of the letter typed here and posted??

Looks pretty straight-forward to me.

Their network utilization software shows you using a lot more upstream bandwidth than a 'normal' user.
As indicated in the letter - your system could have been compromised by a trojan, which when activated sends out thousands of spam e-mail messages. Or, you could be using a P2P program and have lots of people downloading from you.

This was a 'shot across the bow' - they're letting you know gracefully that you've got their attention. If the upload doesn't tail off - the next contact won't be as pleasant....

So - what are you running on that system?

If I read correctly, Time Warner mentioned they recently scanned their selected network's on their system, and found the network you're connected to is using an unusual amount of Internet traffic, on the upstream channel, with the computer's connected to their cable modem. However, it did not specifically say your account. I think it's safe to say with their meaning of "our cable modem", it generally means, their network. I'm leaning towards the fact your franchise dispatched a letter to every RoadRunner subscriber in your area, to make them aware of the network usage.

Do you know anyone else using the RoadRunner service in your area? Perhaps you can give them a ring, and ask them if they also received the letter about the internet traffic ..

[edit: If my assumption isn't correct, then I'd side with dbmaven See Profile's response above]

i honestly dont know .. i thought buy spending the extra dollar (premium RR) i could kinda be excused from any issue , ill have to ask others in my neighborhood about this.

Well, not really. If you look how the cable modem network works, you're not the only one sharing the head-end. Even switching to premium, your only advantages would be increased transfer rates for both downstream and upstream channels. Everything else remains the same (except your billing! ).

With premium, you still would need to be conscious on how you absorb the speeds via RoadRunner, because, as you see, Time Warner does monitor their network from time-to-time. At points, if the bandwidth is being used to the extent where it's affecting 'others' in your neighborhood ... then something has to be done. It's just to keep everything in an ease manner ..

So what software are you running that is raising some flags at TW?

I thought that TW RR had no limits or caps, the letter that you received is intriguing.

Yes, that's true. But, take a look at how the cable modem network works, and you'd see how abusing the bandwidth given can affect the network in more ways than you don't even want to imagine. Many subscribers tend to think if the ISP doesn't state anything about usage, then it's OK to abuse the connection, right? Wrong. The system will start to degrade in service distribution throughout the local network - and that causes a problem for technicians in the area, attempting to keep everything in order .. and for the subscriber's in your area. That's when they begin complaining about speed reduction, and not getting what they pay for.

Wow 1.7 terrabtes and 600 gigs, you might want to consider useing a better internet service so you dont waste time on download/upload.
Also im curious what are you downloading that much of that brings attention to the fbi if you dling music movies etc on kazza lime wire or what ever you use.
I know its none of my buisness but even im curious.

The FBI? The letter never mentioned anything about the FBI, or any 3rd party involved.

@rr.com

I am suprised the letter doesn't tell ya to lose the P2P it just makes simple recommendations to limit the upload.
It doesn't however give an warnings or anything. I guess that is for the next letter:D

It's *their* network and they don't need to announce a policy regarding caps or limits. If their ToS or AUP is like most ISPs, it surely says something along the lines that a user isn't allowed to adversely affect the network with "excessive" usage. That's ALL they need...

I think that's a typo on their end.... They surely mean the user's cable modem.

I seriously doubt that they sent this to everyone in their area too. The people who are guilty know they're probably guilty and they WON'T call. The people who are just normal users will call and the last thing TW/RR wants to deal with is hundreds of legit customers calling about something they're not guilty of.

I agree, Hall See Profile. However, from what they stated in their post with systems connected to their cable modem, I thought that's how they were relaying it to the subscriber's, since the average joe doesn't know the definition of "head-end", or "CMTS". So, they used phrase "cable modem" as a general substitution. That's just my way of looking how the situation could be approached from other stand-points .. you can call it my so-called theory.
