Thanks for the suggestion...
I'm very happy with the future possibilities of what I can get for internet/phone but I'm kinda upset with the broadband options I have now. Like I said, OOL is getting worse and worse, and FIOS isn't available yet. Its available in Rockaway Boro which is like 1 mile from where I live now. So I guess I'll have to settle with OOL until FIOS becomes available.

Since you are in New Jersey you might also want to check out the other NJ company, VoicePulse - their users seem pretty happy with the service overall (not that there are never minor glitches, but all VoIP companies have them) and I think you will find that you get a lot more features for your money. Not trying to steer you one way or the other, just suggesting you compare both before making a decision.

Ok I just checked out vonage's website. Their VOIP service is only 25$ a month!!! Does anyone else have this? Are there any known problems with vonage? Are there hidden fees? I already know that they have number portability... and they have all of the features that optimum voice has.
So right now I'm thinking Vonage= 25$ a month + Optimum Online 45$ a month- that would be 70$ a month. Currently I have verizon DSL and Verizon's Phone plan- 30$ + 55$= 85$. So there is a decent difference, not to mention that optimum online is A LOT better than verizon dsl.
The ONLY downside to getting this and not the double play is that the double play would be cheaper for the first year 30$ + 30$ = 60$. But... from what I hear, Optimum Online's speed and reliability is going down the crapper. If I were to just get optimum online, then there wouldn't be a contract and I could ditch it whenever I wanted to to get Verizon FIOS when its available.

Re: Optimum voice- multiple phone jacks and porting

if you give up your number you can't get it back. Best to keep it at bare minimum (usually around $8 a month plus a few dollars tax) until they can port it.

OR, go with another VOIP provider. I originally was going to get Verizon Voice Wing, then found out (this is funny) that they couldn't port THEIR OWN number (my current number was a Verizon number, but Voice Wing couldn't port it).

So I dumped them and went with Packet8, who COULD port the Verizon number. Crazy stuff.

I have a question about using optimum voice through the phone jacks in my house--
if I understand it correctly... (which i probably don't)
mbs uses the houses cable line- which is plugged into the modem-- a thats is then run from the modem to the phone- a signal and a dial tone can then be heard in the phone--
IF I were to plug a phone line in from the wall into the optimum voice modem then would every phone jack in the house carry a signal-- meaning I could hook a phone up to any phone jack in the house?
Probably, BUT you must make sure that your inside wiring is totally disconnected from the telephone company's lines, or you will damage the equipment. Here's an often-mentioned page that should explain everything you need to know:

ALSO- I know this has probably been discussed... but is there any hope of number portability in the near future? If I get optimum voice NOW and get a new number- is there a way I could get my old number back after having the service (with a new number) for a few months?
