Your router should have a built in firewall that disables incoming ports by default. If it doesn't then get a decent router. If it does make sure your PC is not set as DMZ or the firewall is turned off. |

Well that's what it is. My networked DVD player has software that runs on my PC. It allows me to stream files off my PC to my DVD player and watch them on my projector. I put in my-ip:8000 and it took me straight to the software on my PC that the DVD player uses. All of this is done on my local network. Is there a way with the router I have to close this port to the WAN but keep it open on my LAN? |

Port 8000 is usually a proxy or http port. Try pluging your IP into your browser with this format......
»12.111.111.111:8000/
(err, put http-colon-slash-slash in front of that.)
if you don't know you have something on that port, you might have some sort of virus esp. with a non-standard port like that. |

I got it too, for port 25. For a machine that I did not even know have any mail stuff other than outlook on it. (It has had all kinds of things installed on it so it doesn't surprise me.) Also to note I have the Microsoft remote desktop port open and the letter did not include that one. |

Only thing I can think of that might use port 8000 is my networked DVD player which I believe uses port 8000 as well. It has access to Shoutcast built in and does access the internet. |

| Guys I got the letter. They referenced port 8000 being open on my PC. I've got a WRT64G router and have 1 PC, Packet 8 VOiP and my XBOX hooked up to it. I do not use BearShare or anything similar. I do occasionally use Azerues to download torrent files. What is port 8000 commonly used for and do I need it open? I can go into my router and insure it's closed. |
