[General] can't upload by FTP

I've been unable to upload files to my website (hosted at another ISP). I only discovered this on 4/28, I hadn't tried to upload for a while.

I can connect in via FTP, see the files. I can delete files. I can initiate an upload, but it times out, leaving a file of size 0 on the server.

Windows XP, Belkin 54g router.

I turned off the firewall on the router.
Windows Firewall has always been off.
I tried on two different machines on my network - one wireless and one directly connected.
I tried two different ftp programs and using IE.
I tried my friend's FTP server (not hosted on the same ISP).
I rebooted, of course.
I power cycled my DSL modem and my router.

My ISP has "cpanel" which allows you to move files to their site using a web-based upload. That worked fine.

But they also updated their FTP software to something newer and leaner to see that helped. It didn't.

Is SBC possibly blocking something like a port of mine?

Thanks I'm sure there's more info I can provide, let me know. Appreciate the help here, as always.

SBC is not doing anything that would interfere with FTP.

Note that FTP is complex. It opens a second connection for a file transfer. Consider the possibility that your firewall might be blocking the data connection.

FTP has two modes, active and passive. With active mode, the server connects back to your system for the data connection. This might be blocked. A NAT router can only work if the router has special code to snoop on FTP connections, and open the port for the data connection as needed. In my experience, most routers do handle this properly. My wired belkin router does fine.

In passive mode, you connect to the server for the data connection. It is usually easier to get that working.

If possible, experiment with switching between active and passive mode on your client software.

If you're connecting to the FTP server through port 21 then you need to check the settings your making the upload with. Once it connects, you can rule out port blocking.

Okay, I switched the FTP client from Passive to Active and that seemed to work. I don't know why this happened "all of a sudden" but it seems like it worked.

Thanks!
