[VPN] WRT54GX vpn problems

Has anyone successfully connected to their XP Pro with a VPN incoming connection using this router? It worked fine with my old BEFSW11S4 version 4 router, but when I got this new WRT54GX, it times out on the "verifying username and password". I have forwarded port 1723 etc., spent several hours on level 2 tech support, and no success. I have the latest firmware in the new router as well.

Sorry about the repost - my subject line was incorrect before as it referenced the wrong router. This is the new Mimo router.

Have you also noticed that the "logs" don't show much. Simply timestamps and a message - no port info.

Why don't you use GoToMyPC instead?

I have exactly the same problem. I get stuck at the "Verifying username and password..." and it times out. Customer support can't seem to help either. I got it to work after I restarted the router, but immediately after, without changing any settings, it stopped working! Definitly something to do with the router...

I have the same Issue. I've just replaced a WRT54G with the SRX model.
I have a windows 2003 server setup as a VPN server, with the old router the VPN was fine, after swapping the router my clients now time out at the "Verifying Username & Password" screen.
I went through it with Linksys and they now believe the problem is in the Firmware (I have the current latest - 1.02.06).
All linksys sould tell me was to keep checking for updated firmware.

I too having the same issue with this POS, have been trying for weeks now and still not able to get VPN to work, VPN will work just fine with a netgear router, so i know is not me or my network... I feel that Linksys should get their A$$ togther to fix this issue or recall their product or something... i paid 275 dollor plus tax from office max. what a POS..

Well I do feel a little better now that I know that its not something I did, since there are others having the same problem, it would have been nice if live chat had this information.

Did anyone get a time frame from Linksys for the new Firmware release?

Hi guys, I just got the WRT54GX V2 also, and my brother uses VPN for work for email. We share a comcast connection. If he connects his laptop wired to the router he gets the same problem, times out. But if he connects wireless it works fine. And no ports are forwarded. I'm using the 2.00.8 V2 firmware.
Glad to hear it's not just me. For sure a firmware problem.

Hope this helps
TK

I have the same problem, but If I turn on the DMZ and point it to the VPN server it works. It is as if though the router is blocking something else. GRE? I don;t even know how you would define GRE in this thing.

But I have used this router version in 3 different locations and it blocked PPTP in all 3 with 3 different routers. Put in another router and everything is great.

Same problem here. Have tried multiple work-arounds to no avail. VPN passthrough works fine using my WRT54GS, but not with the GX.

Pretty sloppy work on the part of Linksys for a "premium" wireless router that promotes VPN passthrough as one of its features.

Anxiously awaiting a firmware update.

My company had this same problem with the Linksys WRT54GX v1.0 MIMO router. We purchased 14 of them for use in our offices across the country and although we really needed the extended range capability, we ultimately returned all 14 routers. The only reason - our employees couldn't get VPN access to our headquarters WITH ANY OF THEM. We later found out from some other companies that they had similar experiences.

Our IT folks spent more than 7 1/2 hours with Linksys tech support and also swapped out routers with new ones Linksys sent us. Nada - we never got any the routers able to VPN to our server and became convinced that they are flawed when it comes to remote VPN access. Since then we've switched to one of Linksys's MIMO competitors and haven't had any problems with VPN access.

What MIMO product works with VPN passthrough correctly?

What about the Cisco VPN Client? What settings do I need to change? The wired connection works with this, the wireless doesn't - even with the same router (WRT54GX v2)

I had the same issues, Cisco VPN client 4.0.3(c) WRT54GX-V2 Firmware Version: 2.00.08, wired works fine, wireless doesn't work (Connects, but can't talk to remote side). Worked with support for about 2 hours, and the Linksys tech told me to take it back to the store, which is what I'll do. Too bad, the extra range was nice. Tried it with both my internal centrino adapter, plus the Linksys SRX pcmcia card, just to be sure.

I think the problem with the WRT54GX (V2) and the Cisco VPN client is the transport setting in the client. Since I've changed the default transport setting in the VPN client (ver. 4.7xxxx) from IPSEC over UDP (default) to IPSEC over TCP it works fine. The WRT54GX seems to block a lot of UDP traffic including IPSEC over UDP.
Weird stuff cuz their other routers don't do this. I will create a call at Linksys why this is happening and why it is impossible to change this behavior from the Webinterface.

I hope my tip works for you guys too.

I don't know which MIMO products work with this correctly. I ultimately returned the SRX router, tried the Belkin which would not work either, and then bought the WRT54G v3.0 which works fine. Not supposed to be as fast as the MIMO stuff, but it is about twice as fast as my BEFSW11S4 v4 wireless. In my very basic tests which were standard G and B, the MIMO routers were possibly a bit slower than the WRT54G.

Like eveyone else I have this same problem and for me the change to IPSEC over TCP did not work, but I have a much older version of the Cisco VPN client (version 3.5.2(B) Would be v.interested in any followup you get from Linksys since I really don't want to take this back...

Changing to IPSec over TCP worked for me.

However, my work network uses an automatic proxy config script...meaning I had to make sure automatic detection of proxy settings was checked (not a problem with IE, but in firefox you either have to use the config script URL option or auto-detect settings). Enabling auto-detect in firefox made everything work.

I had the same problem and ended up creating a Port Trigger at 500 to fix it. You can configure this under the Applications & Gaming menu. That did the trick for my Nortel Contivity VPN.

Yeah, me too with the port trigger at 500! I spent hours on the phone with Linksys, and the few lines above fixed my VPN problem in seconds. Thanks.
