| [General] PacBell repair
I would like to know what the chance is of getting pacbell to replace my 50 year old terminal block with a NID for free.I've tried calling 611 but can't find an option that will let me talk to a real person.I want the nid so I can install a single splitter so I can remove all the phone filters and install a home run to my modem with cat5e.Any advice will be appreciated or a tip where I could get a nid myself. Thanks Bob |

| Some have posted that lack of grounding may be one way to get SBC to replace the block but I don't think there's a consensus that this always works. As far as getting to a live body at 611, check out the suggestion made by cfm117 in this thread....»[Line Problem] Line noise after a recent DSL subscription
If you are successful in getting a no-charge update, please come back here and let us all know how you did it. This question comes up from time to time and it would be nice to have current infomation. |

One of the first things they did was to replace the 40-year-old drop, and the 40-year-old station protector. Because the problem was not DSL related, and on their side of the demarc, both replacements were at no charge.
OTOH, you can install a POTS splitter off of an old station protector, assuming it is properly installed in the first place. The premise side terminal pair would connect to the "Network" terminals in the DSL Spitter. The telephone run transfers to the "Voice" pair inside the DSL Splitter, and a new home run to the DSL modem runs off of the "Data" pair.
I have attached an edited image of my installation; overlaid the new NID with a schematic of the old station protector which was removed (before I thought to take photos). I used red and green because that is typical of older installations. In my diagram, when looking at my POTS splitter, red = blue, and green = white/blue stripe. |

I don't know. Are they going to install the actual splitter, or just the NID. The part of the photo I edited was the NID that SBC install; only a two line hookup, no room for an internal splitter. Considering that it was telephone technicians, I expect that they only had telephone[1] NIDs on the truck. I have seen the NID that an ASI tech will install; but what will it cost for one of them?
[1] I know, I know, there is no such thing as a "telephone" NID. But the techs who rolled were voice line techs and I doubt that they would carry the fancier rigs which can accept an internal splitter. Given the difference in price between the units, it makes sense for the fancier rigs to only be installed by ASI techs. Of course, I could be wrong. I don't work for SBC, and know nothing of how their trucks are equipped for service calls. -- Norman ~A deam, dream, no dream ~Voices of the night go across the forest ~A dream, dream, no dream ~Good night my good child |

| Norman; Thanks for the advice and info. After some thought I decided that saving a few bucks and dealing with the telcos is not worth it.I'm just going to install a pots splitter myself. It seems like the best way to go. Thanks Bob |
