My speed, service price, and location

WISP: skybandwireless.com (africa-online.net)
Speed: 32/32
Setup price: $1500
Monthly price: $250/month
External IP address': 1
Internal IP address': as many as needed
Domain names: 1
Mail boxes: 50
Reliability/consistency: so so
Customer Service: terrible
Downtime: maybe once a week
Location: Blantyre, Malawi

This is one of the first WISPs here in Malawi. As you can see, it is quite expensive. 32kbps is the lowest speed and the higher speeds can range up to US$10,000 per month.

I believe you are confusing speed with bandwidth...

"The system has been designed for maximum performance and reliability and offers speeds of up to 3Mbps up to a range of 50km."

The 32 Kbps is the "chunks" of bandwidth that the company offers...

Read their advertisement more carefully.

"Read their advertisements more carefully?" Heck, I'm using it. The fastest speed at which we can download/upload is around 32kbps.

For that price and the actual speeds you state you are getting, aren't there any dialup solutions on the island? Since it seems with dialup speeds and that price, you are getting screwed!

Re: What is your speed, service price, and locatio

Hey i'm new... beta testing a WISP in the caribbean , much better than most of the wired ones .
ISP name : green dot

Speed : 256k/96k ( but fluctuates , when they feel like i can get 512k- 1mbit , or 128k , testing after all )

Rate : 400 TT (trinidadian dollars )
about 64 US , considering dial up is 56 US here thats DAMNED good .
Service : pretty poor compared to 1st world country ISP's, but good for a 3rd world country , one ISP , also the phone company etc. TSTT has the monopoly and chokes all others , they hog the only suboceanic optic fibre line that runs straight to florida , so either other ISP's pay about
600 US a month for 1.5mbit T1 or use satellite backbones ,
most use the satellite backbone including mine , so online gaming is impossible !
They use moterolla canopy to provide service .

Re: My speed, service price, and location

Dialup is also expensive. There is a charge of about US$30 per month, plus you have to pay for the phone connection per minute. And in some places, like where I live, it took four years to get a landline, and then it does not even work most of the time for voice conversations and it is even worse for data, cutting out every couple minutes. This is one of those things that comes with living in a real 3rd world country. First of all, there is practically no competition. Second, the government doesn't help at all and puts huge taxes on almost everything.

Re: What is your speed, service price, and location?

Speed: 1.8Mb/1.2Mb (Varies a lot)
Price: $49.99
Location: lpbroadband/Loveland, Colorado

I just moved from Ohio to Colorado (this week), the installer showed up on time and was finished in an hour. I had been sweating getting broadband and this is a great solution for rural Colorado.

My oldest son is complaining about being the "slowest" connection on XBox Live, but in Ohio, we had 5Mb/512kb service via TWC/RR.

I have had no trouble using VPN to connect to work and response time for telnet sessions via VPN are very good. I have also used a VoIP softphone via the VPN connection with good results.

All in all, I am pleased.

Re: What is your speed, service price, and location?

1MB/1MB for 30.00 per month in Machias Me. This is great deal vs. cable which is 768mb/128mb for 65.00 a month. I called Axiom to test for a signal and they were at my house within 10 minutes ....unreal...

They are upgrading the packed to 2mb by Dec. which is great for a rural area , alot of people only had dial-up with no alternative.

I have had faster connections with GWI and others but since moving this will do .
