wrt54g qdisc

does the wrt54g use the linux kernel's iproute2 code, or something else?

I'm wondering about if its possible to tinker with the queue disciplines the router uses

a long time ago I had a linux box doing NAT for my network and I was using a couple of the more advanced iproute2/netfilter qdiscs, random early drop and round-robin ... RED on incoming and round-robin on outgoing ... basically to prevent a single data stream from monopolizing the bulk of the bandwidth

I notice that seems to happen on my wrt54g's (one running stock, one running latest hyperwrt)

any suggestions where to look for tinkering with such things on the WRT, if it's even possible?

This is what the QoS in Alchemy and Talisman does. IMQ with RED for incoming and SFQ for outgoing. Both RED and SFW run under the latest HTB qdisc code with some internal optimizations for low-latency and QoS quicker response to changes.

See /usr/sbin/svqos in Alchemy to see the QoS script setup. Iptables and ebtables packet marking are using to flag packets for QoS handling.

Talisman has a few optimizations over Alchemy but is currently essentially the same.

The biggest issue in Linux ingres QoS is the fact we cannot change the TCP/IP ACK advertisement window to notify the other side to slow down, hence the use of IMQ and RED to simply throw away packets coming in too fast. This is not a proper ingres QoS method so Talisman is slated for a kernel modification to add userspace capability to change the TCP/IP ACK window on-the-fly for proper ingres QoS by asking to opposite side to slow down its send rate. We'll also use the current IMQ+RED method as a backup, but the ACK window change should make this superfluous in most instances.
