Westell Wirespeed modem - upgrade, modem browser?

Modem: B90-36R515-01, Rev F

I have been attempting to apply the Verizon firmware upgrade (from the Westell site) to this modem (has an old BellAtlantic logo on it) and have been totally unsuccessful. It's my understanding that with this firmware, the Westell modem browser software should work and give me my line stats (the modem browser cannot currently find the modem).

On a W98SE machine, the upgrade software cannot find the modem either (and yes, I'm connecting directly to the modem from the 'puter, with no router, switch or hub between). The NIC in the 'puter is assigned a fixed IP of the form: 192.168.1.x (I've tried several others as well). I've also tried three different CAT5e cables between the 'puter and the modem. All three of these cables work with WinPoET and between the router and the modem.

If I use WinPoET, there's no problem logging onto my account. With a Linksys router behind the modem, there is no problem logging on using Router PPPoE.

Is there something I'm overlooking, or is it a lost cause with this particular modem?
