 | reply to november88 Wonder how many people who have Google set as their homepage are firing up their phones to call their ISP customer support.
I immediately went to my router. Google never goes down, right? They're Google.

; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> a groups-beta.l.google.com @e.l.google.com ; Bad server: e.l.google.com -- using default server and timer opts {snip} Hmm, no A record for e.l.google.com? That'd mean 1 out of 4 requests would fail (randomly, based upon DNS cache and expiries). Let's check:
$ dig a e.l.google.com.
; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> a e.l.google.com. ;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch ;; got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NXDOMAIN, id: 30280 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 1, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUERY SECTION: ;; e.l.google.com, type = A, class = IN Looks to me like Google broke their own DNS zones. Querying their nameservers DIRECTLY for e.l.google.com works -- I get an A record back -- but going through normal means, I don't.
So, my guess is that someone forgot to increase the serial number when changing zones, the hostmaster updated the zones but forgot to toss in an A record for e.l.google.com initially (then later updated the zones, but haven't been updated in peoples' DNS cache tables because the queries for e.l.google.com failing are already cached and wont de-cache until the expiry is reached), or there's something majorly screwed with their DNS setup entirely.
In English: all of the above basically says that 1 out of 4 DNS requests will fail, until DNS caches everywhere are flushed, or newer records are pulled down from Google's nameservers. If anyone wants to try calling Google directly and asking (yeah, they might actually tell you if a mistake was made, believe it or not), be my guest: 650-253-0000.
Hope this helps, FWIW...

 koitsuPremium,MVM join:2002-07-16 Mountain View, CA kudos:14 | That engadget.com link implies a DNS-related issue, or possibly a DNS cache poisoning ordeal (this has become a HUGE focus in the past couple of weeks, as people have actually begun doing it on a wide scale).
I refuse to believe Google's actual content servers were compromised. It's too bad someone couldn't post the A record they were getting for www.google.com when they got those results... -- Making life hard for others since 1977. In memory of 2005... |
