Re: To DSL or Not To DSL?

I took the plunge....I called Verizon this morning to place my order and also verify the 30 day no payment try before you buy offer. If it runs pretty close to caps consistently for those 30 days I'll sadly be saying goodbye to insight. I say sadly because they were the first high speed service to become available to my tiny lil town..but I'm tired of all the speed issues I've been having and nothing being done about it.

thanks

He has no complaints, he only had the 768/128 service last time I checked, but I think he has since upgraded to a faster package they now offer. He has been very happy with the service. YMMV since every area might well have different line quality,

Sorry, had to wait til I got back to work. The Westell router is a model 327W. I would think that you would get really close to the caps at 655ft but I do remember reading posts on here somewhere of people living real close to the CO and getting low speeds. I guess there's really no way to tell until you hook it up and perform some real world tests.

Charlie, which model of Westell router do they provide?

I just checked my distance to CO from this site »routemap.esri.com/rmims/dsl_web/ and it shows "Carrier GTE NORTH INC. (RDKYINXARS0)Total: 655 ft"
Would this put me close to the 3000/768 caps for Verizon's DSL?

thanks

Phat,
I just signed up for SBC DSL here and even though I'm showing 1984/512 service my speeds are much better than my Insight. Of Course, I'm seeing the same insight problems your seeing with huge drops in speeds at night. I did get Verizon DSL installed at work and we were just within the area so we are only seeing 768K down. But I have to say that even at those speeds and using the westell router which is also wireless with 5 machines (1 wireless) It appears as smooth as any other broadband connection I've used. In real world tests at home (SBC) I'm seeing mid downloads of 200. With my 4000K Insight I'm lucky to see 90 during my normal time of use.

Yea the 1 year contract worries me a bit, but they do give 30 days satisfaction guarentee..My luck all will go smooth for 30 days then turn to crap.
Has your father's speeds been consistent?

thanks

Sounds like it is probably worth a try, though the 1 year contract could haunt you if the service is bad. In my personal experience 3 cable installs and 1 dsl install, My DSL service was much better. I am not in a verizon area so I can't give you any feedback on them, though my father uses Verizon DSL for his business(residential install though) and has been very happy with it.

I am so sick and tired of having to call tech support and getting no results....If I knew Verizon would be better I'd switch to satellite and DSL.

I think I saw on their site a 30 day satisfaction guareentee....I may give um a shot.

Do you already have a phone line? If so why not do the math and decide if 180 bucks a year could be put to better use? I'd switch if it was available here in the naked variety, and possibly if the local phone + dsl was only 45 together.

I recently learned that Verizon DSL is now available to my home. I think the package is 3000/768 for $29.95 with free Westell modem/router combo and self install kit ($19.95 s/h + 1 year contract) and first month service free.
I currently have Insightbb 4000/384 @ $44.95 per month and average at least 1 or 2 tech calls per month because of slow speeds (speed test 2 minutes ago »/speedtests/21···15674732)

I guess what I'm asking is would I be any better off going with DSL over cable? Has anyone here tried or know someone that uses Verizon DSL? If so is it decent?

thanks
