Microsoft Security Bulletin(s) for 5/10/05

May 10, 2005
Today Microsoft released the following Security Bulletin(s).

Note: www.microsoft.com/technet/security and www.microsoft.com/security are authoritative in all matters concerning Microsoft Security Bulletins! ANY e-mail, web board or newsgroup posting (including this one) should be verified by visiting these sites for official information. Microsoft never sends security or other updates as attachments. These updates must be downloaded from the microsoft.com download center or Windows Update. See the individual bulletins for details.

Because some malicious messages attempt to masquerade as official Microsoft security notices, it is recommended that you physically type the URLs into your web browser and not click on the hyperlinks provided.

Bulletin Summary:

Important Bulletins:

Vulnerability in Web View Could Allow Remote Code Execution (894320)

This represents our regularly scheduled monthly bulletin release (second Tuesday of each month). Please note that Microsoft may release bulletins out side of this schedule if we determine the need to do so.

If you have any questions regarding the patch or its implementation after reading the above listed bulletin you should contact Product Support Services in the United States at 1-866-PCSafety (1-866-727-2338). International customers should contact their local subsidiary.

I got and installed the update. I did have to reboot, however... perhaps that was because I downloaded he update exe, or, what have you.

Nothing blowing up yet, here!

I just logged on, and automatic updates alerted me that there is 1 update avaiable. It's being labled as "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - May 2005 (KB890830)". Anyone else getting this instead of the 894320 update mentioned above?

the malicious software removal tool is now released every month...not really needed if you run any other av/at software. not sure why you're not seeing the other update, except that a lot of times updates don't show up for everyone on the day they are released---give it a shot tomorrow.

It takes a few hours for everyone to show the updates. Check back later and you should show all pertinent to your OS.

If you have XP, it does not have an update.

Affected Software:

• Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 – Download the update

• Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (ME) – Review the FAQ section of this bulletin for details about these operating systems.

Non-Affected Software:

• Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2

• Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Service Pack 1 (Itanium)

• Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003 (Itanium)

• Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

• Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

• Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for Itanium-based Systems and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with SP1 for Itanium-based Systems

• Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition

if you're asking about the monthly malicious software tool, not needed if you regularly run and update a good AV program. this tool, mainly designed for the users out there who don't run such programs, detects a few of the more common nasties. it's a supplement to, not a substitute for, an AV, and is really very limited.

checkk tomorrow to see if there are any other updates for your OS...apparently none are for xp, for a change .

I went ahead and successfully installed it, but nothing happened after the install. Was it suppose to run itself right after the download?
