The biggest advantage, as combined from above, is that a company becomes your "SP", not just an ISP. Compeition won't be down to the component level as it is now.

Bundled deals and IP centric network services (video, telephony, Internet) are only possible with the proper conduit. By Verizon deploying fiber, they are putting themselves in a position to realistically do this...Not attempting half baked BellSouth and SBC deployments of fiber to the node, then twisted pair to the home.

Cable is already there by having at least coax to the home. It allows for much greater bandwidth than twisted pair wiring. And cable is already offering these services.
