ssego join:2002-01-06 Villisca, IA | New firmware gt701-wg-qw04-3.60.2.0.6.3!!! A tech sent me this to try to solve the problems I was having training at 7Mb. No, unfortunately it didnt help that issue, but it does add more features that I'm sure some of you will like. She also told me that they are supposed to be releasing another firmware version in October. |

MrPete7 join:2005-05-08 Colorado Springs, CO | ssego, can you telnet to the modem and report to us all the results of these commands? Perhaps the new firmware resolves the modem lockup issue!
cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_max cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_tcp_timeout_established cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_tcp_timeout_close_wait Thanx muchly, p |

This firmware on the gt701 support page seems to be not released yet, although I tried it anyways. It seems to run quite well. I notice A glitch in the interface after nat firewall settings there is no next or back or apply buttons (oops) you can still access the other setting beyond that point from the far left menu, so no big deal. Other than that it has some new Qos features, More status info, other helpful info throughout. I have notice right away that my attenuation on the upload part has dropped half what it was. Snr/attenuation I had prior was SNR 24-27/7 Attenuation 47/58 now it's SNR 31/7 Attenuation 47/29. I am not sure if that is correct or not. Just hope the downside of it is fixed on it too. Anyways heres some pics of the noticeable feaures...

 | reply to ssego almost safe for me to say the major problem i had, modem locks up sometimes due to high bandwidth and too many connections, is fixed.

MrPete7 join:2005-05-08 Colorado Springs, CO | reply to ssego ghsty9, could you give us the results of running the three commands listed above in this thread? That would provide some good confirmation of their fixes
Thanks! |

MrPete7 join:2005-05-08 Colorado Springs, CO | reply to ssego Bummer. OK, so they have *not* fixed the issues that cause the modem to lockup over time for many people.
(To prove it, here's a simple test: pick a valid domain name with no web server. Repeatedly access that domain. Every access will add another line to /proc/net/ip_conntrack (sp?) which will stick around for five days. When you get close to 1024 lines, you must reboot your modem.)
I may be missing something, but it appears the fix noted in »**Several** ActionTec GT-701WG issues resolved! is still needed. |

| reply to thataboi I have been informed from a "reliable source" that some of the main issues resolved were the attenuation readings, FEC errors, and LED lights. Here is what I have been told, quoted from the source. "FYI, there are always some hidden screens on the actiontec that aren't linked from the normal menus. Some of them seem to be just left over from some previous actiontec stuff and don't function, but there are a couple things on this that might be helpful.
If you browse to 192.168.0.1/support/utilities, you'll get an option for a system log that you have the option to expport to a .txt file that is supposed to be helpful in troubleshooting. The only problem with it though is that if the modem is rebooted, it wipes all of the system log info out so you can't see what locked up your modem in the first place.
It corrected some status reporting problems on errors and attenuation. There was a glitch before in reporting FEC errors where it would actually show 68 errors for every 1 actual FEC error. The old firmware also falsly doubled the upstream attenuation reading which is fixed here as well.
It increases the Port Forwarding max entries from 20 to 28.
The speed of the flashing LED's increase and decrease based on the traffic going through. The power LED sequence was changed to help with trobuleshooting. When powered up, The light goes red as usual, but then it goes amber for a few seconds before going green. When red, it is conduction a self test. When it is amber, it's loading the firmware and t hen flashing green it is initializing the loaded firmware. Before, a solid red light could either mean bad hardware or corrupted firmware. Now, solid red is bad hardware and it needs replaced, solid amber just means the firmware is corrupted and needs to be reflashed using the recovery tool." I hope this helps. PM me for questions. -Bill |

I do like having the firwall default to OFF. Maybe if I can learn the telnet commands as good as I know the cisco 678, I might give this modem a good try.
Have to admit though that the internet and ethernet lights sure look like they are on CRACK when passing traffic. Never seen lights flash like that. I give it a few days to see how it does. Later... Mike.... |

ssego join:2002-01-06 Villisca, IA | I noticed that about the lights too. My gf's computer is on the wireless and mines wired, so I can sit and watch the lights go apeshit when shes browsing. Now all I have to do is figure out how to give MY bandwidth priority over hers :P |
|
 | Let me know when you figure it out. |
|
 | reply to ssego would the setting that gives certain allocation of bandwidth to VOIP etc help you out in this case? Forgive me, I cannot remember the name... |
|
 | reply to ssego What features?? Does it maintain connection more reliably? |
|
christcorpPremium join:2001-05-21 Cheyenne, WY kudos:1 | Well, after a few days of monitoring, I believe the new firmware is stable. The only advantages to it I see however is that it shows the connection speed on the main menu, the FEC errors are a little more accurate, and it has a few more monitoring values to look at.
I don't think it actually performs any better than before. The SNR values are still inaccurate. As far as fixing any bugs, I never really had any problems with the modem to being with.
Anyway, the new firmware definately doesn't hurt anything, and it does provide some additional monitoring values. Later... Mike... |

 | reply to ssego This firmware is wonderful but I have a GT701 without wireless. |
