 | New modem and new 7meg speeds... Slow downloads??? Ok When I download Bittorrents on my old arescom modem i could get around 146kbps... But with this new actiontec modem and the new 7meg speed when i download the same torrents it downloads at like 67kbs.... Also when I download off of P2P programs it never gets above 30kbs on songs that the most ppl have.. Before it would go atleast 130+ kbps on those same songs with the arescom and the old 1.5 qwest package... Is there something blocking my speeds so i cant get the full speed on downloads??? Or is qwest just messing up??? Please can anyone help me...
Sorry for any typos im in a hurry
Thanx to anyone that can help me |

 | I wouldn't use P2P to gauge ur transfer rates...
In the meantime, check your port settings.. |

Re: New modem and new 7meg speeds... Slow download I just upgraded to new 7 meg speeds. I have a arescom netdsl 800 modem. Does this modem need to be swapped out?? |

ssego join:2002-01-06 Villisca, IA | reply to Oreoboy206 It's most likely NAT that's messing you up. You'll have to do 1 of three things, both of which have been discussed thoroughly in these forums. Port forwarding, DMZ, or bridge mode and PPPoE. The preferable method is bridge mode and PPPoE, since it gives you an outside IP to each computer.. but that doesn't work in all areas. If you only need one computer to have full access then DMZ would be easiest. |

chizz join:2005-05-12 Springville, UT | reply to Oreoboy206 I just called and they say there should be no problem with the NetDSL 800 and the new speed.
Just in case, I ordered the Actiontec GT701 wireless DSL modem since I can modify the firewall settings on it and Im sick of not being able to with my NetDSL 800. The new modem cost $59.00. Did they charge you for your new modem Oreoboy?? |

NAT won't cause speed problems...an application either runs through a NAT server or it doesn't. It doesn't run half-speed through a NAT server. 2) As for NAT problems, the solutions are 2-fold: either get the application running through the NAT server (via port forwarding settings, of which DMZing is just one extreme example), or eliminate NAT in the system (via PPPoE, PPPoA with DHCP-spoofing, or thirdly via PPPoA and multiple public IP addresses). 3) PPPoE only you gives you 1 public IP if the ISP has it set up that way. |

Re: New modem and new 7meg speeds... Slow download If I wasn't sure about it I wouldn't have posted it. I have lots of personal experience with Bittorrent, and the problem he's having with it. I had the same problem myself when I first signed up with Qwest and got this crap modem. The facts that I can assure you of are:
1.)Bittorrent depends on client to client connections. If NAT interferes you wont get all of the possible connections, hence your speeds suffer because you won't be able to connect to all your seeds.
2.)I have four PCs on my network, all connected via RASPPPOE and the bridged actiontec. They ALL have an outside IP address. |

 | ssego, this is a given. |

 | reply to ssego Im only using the modem on one computer.... How exactly do I get this DMZ thing to work??? I tried doin it in the Actiontec advanced setup page... It asks me to type in my computers IP address so I did and its still the same.... I download torrents with Bittornado.... There is a status light that tells you if your connected... Before with the Arescom modem it would be Green meaning everything is working right... Now with this actiontec modem its yellow according to what it says on the bottornado info it means that im either behind a firewall or says something about proxy servers... I dont have any firewall other then the Windows XP one... Also i tried downloading the same songs and the same torrents at my friends house down the street. He uses comcast cable and he got around 350kbps on the same torrents and songs I was trying to download... funny thing is it says on Qwests DSL site "Great for movie downloads and online gaming" HAHA sorry when I try to download a movie sometimes I get speeds slower then 56k... I hope you Brodband pros can help me... Thanx to anyone that can give me more info |

Assuming you have NAT running correctly, it's not going to slow down your connection. That was my point. If you have an application that requires multiple open ports and you only have some of those open, then yes, your application may have problems. But configured correctly, NAT is not going to run your application half-speed. However, NAT is tough for people to configure and it's a stop-gap measure that comes with many problems.
It's good to know that qwest.net (at least in your area) is configured to hand out at least 4 public IPs over a PPPoE provisioning. The last PPPoE-based provider I used had a limit of 4 IPs, it seems to be a common limit. If you have a chance, you should see if you can get 5 from qwest.net (just to see they limit to 4). |

ssego join:2002-01-06 Villisca, IA | I've had 6 IPs before. And I meant that NAT wasn't configured correctly.. I just didn't word it very well. I meant no offense |
