The battle with ISP's(Not just WISP's) and end users over PtP applications will never end. Port blockers are worthless these days, as some of the adaptive PtP applications will just move over to port 80, and then stuff really goes crazy. That doesn't happen on our network, as we use packet technology that "sees" (for lack of better terms) what type of data is using the network and it sees that the same IP's and ports are getting hit with the same data and strings. I am not our linux guru, I am just repeating what my Sys. Admin. has told me?. I guess we will see what happens in the long run?

The newer technologies are very much more capable than simple "port blockers". These technologies are adaptive...and change as they need to to control the traffic.

The problem is that applications like that take as much bandwidth as they can get. That kills the system for all the other users.

While no ISP's have been sued Yet, There have been rumblings that we could be sued for not blocking traffic we know to be illegal in nature. Who knows WHAT the RIAA will do next?.

To LV man: Ok, thanks for the heads up, looks like I need to go back to Cox. Good thing my contract is up. But man, I wasted $200 for the installation. Looks like unless eMule adapt a system similar to BT where the data are harder to block, it's a goner.
To superdog1: to my knowledge, no ISP has been sued in by the RIAA in the P2P file sharing cases. I think this has to do with limiting bandwidth cost more than anything. |

They probably are, as 95% of Emules traffic is illegal file trading and copyright infringements. It has nothing to do with blocking "power users", but everything to do with lawsuits and the RIAA. While I have no stand on what is "right or wrong" as far as the moral standpoint is concerned, I do understand why a lot of providers are blocking these ports and services, as we simply can NOT afford to defend our subscribers if we are served with papers. While this is unfortunate, it is reality.:)
