IF you are very savvy about computers and security, and like to do a bit of research before installing any updates, and practice generally safe computing, you can consider turning off auto-updates and just making it a practice to go to windows update manually once a week, after researching the updates, and do it from there.
i have auto-updates off (mainly because i'm choosing not to install sp2 on this particular computer), but still install most of the patches offered for xp on the windows update site, usually after others have tried them out first . for the average user, though, auto-updates are usually not a problem, and can be a real effort-saver. -- graciella! | reply to innerspin Like they say when you shop for a Rolls Royce, "...If you have to ask the price, you probably can't afford it!" If you have to ask (whether to update), you probably aren't capable of deciding on a particular update of not (no disrespect intended, only a real expert should make that decision). Therefor you would be best advised to accept ALL critical updates.
Think of if like a vaccine, if your doctor said you needed it, would you say, "No thanks!" |

1 edit | As others said when in doubt update. But heres a thought teach your self. Keep auto updates on for now but make it a habbit to go there once a week any how and read up on that weeks updates. Come here read about what others say about the update use google to search for non ms info on the update. What its for etc. Read microsofts own descrion of the update as well. Adventualy you will get to a point where you will be able to pick and choose what updates you need and what ones you dont. I mean realy if you dont use outlook/express why bother with a update that is only for outlook? Same for iis updates dont use it dont update it. Its a waste of space and even the miniscule chance of it causeing a system stability problem isnt worth it.
