| Salaries of MC Government Officials
It's been entertaining to watch the debates over the MC budget. Recently, they debated the possibility of cutting salaries and it appears they decided, no, that wouldn't save enough money, better to fire people outright.
Anyway, along the way, a spotlight was shone on the salaries of many of our county employees. Some of the salary differences are curious.
For instance, MD Exec Duncan earns $150K (the same amount as MD Gov. Ehrlich). But many people on Duncan's staff are paid more. For instance, Alisoun Moore, head of IT, is paid $164K. Jerry Pasternak, asst to Duncan, is paid $163K.
There are many even higher. But the best deal appears to be for Weast who gets a total package worth $349K, filled with curious things, such as a supplemental pension plan of which he is the only member.

1 edit | Yes, it is popular for the media to take pot shots at the salaries of public officials. It's gets everyones attention.
But if the media would dig into the much more mundane business dealings of the government, they would probably find enough fiscal waste and fat to make your county solvent. But that is just so dull and would take someone with some knowledge of how to properly audit the records to do it.
The nature of the beast is that almost all government entities are not run with a good fiscal business model. The manager who overspends is rewarded with a larger budget and the manger who is thrifty is rewarded with having their budget cut.
Last year in Virginia the legislature felt that we were in such dire financial straits that they voted in an increase in sales tax and income tax beginning July 1, 2004. But in the spring of 2004 almost all state agencies were handed millions of "found" money and told to spend it before the fiscal year ended.
So a few high paid execs don't bother me to much. -- TD ECO |

| Of course, I agree with you but the only one I said seemed high was Weast whose package includes some things so unusual that he is the only person in the entire county that gets them. The rest of my comments were on the relative differences. Maybe you didn't notice that, for example, Duncan's assistant makes more than Duncan. |

An acquaintance of mine was running in a dirty, hard fought race for sheriff of a hick town. I ask why he wanted the job. He answered for the money. A man can take home over $200,000 a year in this position. Why the salary alone is $40,000. |

| reply to DonLibes It could happen. There have been and currently are situations here where long time state employees in higher level positions make more than a governor appointed Agency or Department head.
I know we have had similar issues here in Fairfax with the extremely generous salary and benefit package for the head of the school board. They wanted to be competitive and did what they thought was right to get who they thought was the best person for the job.
It doesn't always work out well for anyone except the person getting all those bucks. Regardless of their performance, they walk away with a bucket of money and all the connections they need to keep on going. -- TD ECO |
